Interesting!

That's why I love this thread, I learn many new things I did not know or had forgotten about.

Aug 24, 2025 - Pirates' pitcher Paul Skenes made career start No. 50 in today's 4-0 win vs. the Rockies in Pittsburgh. He pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out seven, allowing only three hits and he did not walk a batter. Today's game lowered his career ERA to 2.02.

Lowest ERA through 50 career starts In Live Ball Era (since 1920)
1. Vida Blue: 2.01 (1969-72)
2. Paul Skenes: 2.02 (2024-25)
3-T. Howie Pollet: 2.15 (1941-46)
3-T. Orel Hershiser: 2.15 (1984-85)
3-T. Jerry Koosman: 2.15 (1967-69)

Skenes is also trying to join Dwight Gooden as only the second pitcher to win Rookie of the Year and then the Cy Young Award in their second season. Skenes is currently the leading candidate for the 2025 National League Cy Young Award.

In addition, Skenes could be the first starting pitcher to win the Cy Young Award with a losing, won-loss record. He currently has an 8W-9L record. I doubt this will happen, the Pirates' offense has steadily improved as the season has gone on. Go Bucs!
