Me thinks we're the only 3 that enjoy this haha. With you two doing the heavy lifting. Keep it up guys!

edit: had to put in the date for reference :)
I really enjoy this thread. It makes me look at "this day in history" and I learn a lot of new things and get a refresh of things I did learn but have forgotten about. I go in stages where I post in here hot and heavy and then it will go for a period where I kind of forget about it till someone else post something.

History in the making!

Athletics' rookie first baseman, 22-year-old Nick Kurtz, hit four homeruns in last night's game (7/25/25) against Houston. In doing so he became only the twentieth player in MLB history, more than 240,000 MLB games, to hit four homeruns in a game and the first rookie to do it! A four-homerun game is rarer than a perfect game.

I can almost hear Mel Allen now, "How about that!"

There were actually a lot of major events on this day. July 26th.
1775:

The U.S. Postal Service was established by the Second Continental Congress, and Benjamin Franklin was named the first postmaster general.

A couple of shipping related events for our very own ship enthusiast @NorthBrit

1956:
The Italian passenger liner Andrea Doria sank after colliding with the Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket in the Atlantic Ocean; 51 people were killed.

And also on this day in 1956:

Suez Canal seized
On this day in 1956, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser seized control of the Suez Canal and nationalized it, sparking a crisis that later resulted in French, British, and Israeli forces briefly occupying parts of Egypt.

Mike mentions the sinking of the 'Andrea Doria' by the ship 'Stockholm'. Built in 1948 over the years Stockholm had many owners and different names. Her last being 'Astoria'. Just this month at the age of 76 she went to the breakers.

Suez Canal
My Uncle Denis was one of the British soldiers sent Egypt at the time mentioned above to prevent the closure of the canal. A number of ships were 'trapped' in the waterway. One was a merchant ship 'Hartismere'. Dear to my heart, Hartismere was adopted by the school I attended. We schoolchildren wrote many letters to members of the crew. Receiving letters back was such an occasion.
