The ocean liner RMS Empress of Ireland, sank in the Gulf of St. Lawrence shortly after departing from Quebec for Liverpool. She collided, in thick fog, with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad and foundered in only 14 minutes. Although the ship was equipped with watertight compartments and, in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster two years earlier, she carried more than enough lifeboats for all onboard, 1,012 lives were lost - (840 passengers, 172 crew). It remains the worst disaster in Canadian maritime history.

The panic onboard must have been overwhelming, almost unbelievable they all perished. Or, maybe they were all in disbelief?

Both crews on the ships knew the other was there. The Norwegian Captain wanted to pass the Canadian ship starboard to starboard whilst the Canadian ship was on a course to pass port to port. The SS Storstad hit head on into the side of RMS Empress of Ireland.
Most of the passengers were asleep in bed at the time of the accident. For most, to know what had happened and doing something about it it was too late.

I think part of the reason he was so good at football is the size of his hands. He plays on some insurance commercials on our TV presently, and his hands are huge, he has no problem handling the pigskin.

Loved the Concorde! It was so sleek looking. Would of loved to have flown on it.

I did a science fair presentation in 7th grade on it.

Unfortunately, Concorde could only carry 100 passengers and 2.5 tons of freight which made it financially unviable long term, but it did allow Phil Collins (Genesis) to appear at Wembley and Philadelphia on the same day for the Live Aid concerts on July 13 1983.

we must be around the same age, I remember all the hype when it was first introduced, I think I may have been in 5th grade or so, Mr. Google says the first flight was 1969 so in this case my memory was perfect.

I remembered what classroom i was in when we studied it it in the weekly reader

I'm 54

I remember and always looked forward to the weekly reader. I don't think schools pass them out anymore (may be wrong about that) which would sad!

Concorde
The British Government wanted to call the aircraft Concord, the French, Concorde.

I, along with three other work colleagues, won a trip on Concorde; Heathrow to the Azores and back non-stop.
Believing I had won a two tickets; wonderful I could take Dawn as she had never flown before.
I had won only one ticket. I gave it to my Father-in-Law. He had never flown before either. (Dawn would have to wait.) He often talked of the experience the rest of his life.

The only Concorde I have been in was the one in New York. Seen one a few times when I lived in Leeds.

World War II: A cafe in the French town of Benouville was the first place to be liberated from German occupation when British paratroopers seized control of a vital canal bridge in advance of the main Allied D-Day landings in Normandy the following morning on 6th June.

(It is said) Flo's mother had tea and coffee ready for the boys

Also today in 1944
World War II: The people of liberated Rome crowded onto the streets to welcome the victorious Allied troops.
