Colorful livery on newer PCC cars in 1950. Transit fares were finally raised to 10 cents after 30 years at the same fare.
Alabama Power Company purchased the company in 1951, but government made the transit business be sold to a third party.

I have been wanting to share a little of this WW II history, and after reviewing some of my documents find that this first 48 day journey of the 743 Tank Battalion, as depicted in this flyer, would have ended approximately today (7/18). They landed on Omaha Beach on June 5 1944 which would make today about the 79th year anniversary of the end of this initial part of the invasion.

I know this is hard to read but this depicts the first 48 days of the invasion (above). At least the pictoral is there. I have an original copy thanks to my Dad and Great Uncle;

Here is one of the pics in the group, and one of their tanks;

These are familiar locations for some. Makes the problems of today look pretty small.

Interestingly the 743rd Tk Btn. were one of the few units not to lose any tanks on the way in to the landing zone. The Bn. Commander ordered the LCT's to land the tanks ashore due to rough sea's, and not offshore and let them "swim" in, as was originally planned.

In all, 27 Dual-drive (DD) Sherman Tanks sank on the D-Day landing's due to the rough sea's, this led to some infantry units ashore, having no tank support whatsoever, making breaching the German defensive positions extremely difficult.

Cy would go on to win a total of 511 games, still the MLB record. He pitched from 1890-1911 for seven teams.

Not that I really know anything or really care about baseball, but for some reason I know that Ty Cobb used to be able to get hits off Cy Young. The story goes that Ty knew that Cy (interesting correspondence of names there) was really concerned about hitting the batter with his fast ball. So Ty would crowd the plate even to the point that his toes were touching the edge of it. Ty would throw further and further outside. Cy knew it would be outside and could get the hit.

No, George Gay flew for TWA after the war, spending over 30 years with that airline. And he flew a Douglas TBD Devastator at Midway, not an Avenger. There's an interview with him in the clip below, where the interview was conducted between flights in an airport, still wearing his captain's uniform. He passed away in 1994.

Gay appears at about 4 minutes into the clip:

I stand corrected on which airline he flew. Nonetheless, his story is one of the classics of the Battle of Midway. I guess he didn't let his "swim" take the desire to fly out of him. There were, of course, others who took down the three Japanese carriers, and changed the course of the Pacific war. We read about the dive bomber crews doing that job, but a lot more of them paid the ultimate sacrifice than most accounts relate. God Bless them all!

Caddy Shack was released on this day, 1980. Also on the same day, AC/DC's "Back in Black" album is released.

Imagine going to the mall... watching Caddy Shack for the first time, then picking up a new album.

Who ever thought Albums would make a comeback... and record players?

Wait a minute, I think there are a bunch of 8-track cassettes in my old chevy Vega 😁
