July 11, 1968: The Orioles name first base coach Earl Weaver to replace Hank Bauer as Manager. At the time, the Orioles were ten and a half games out of first. Under Weaver the Orioles winning percentage was .585 (48-43) for the remainder of the 1968 season.

Weaver's 1969-1971 Orioles are one of the best teams in the history of Baseball. Weavers time as manager of the Orioles resulted in the 1970 World Series Championship and a total of four American League Championships in the 1970s. His Orioles won five of the first six American League East titles (1969, 1970, 1971, 1973 & 1974). In addition to the 1979 American League Championship. For a total of one World Series Championship, four American League Championships and six American League East titles. His Orioles were a contender every year.

Earl Weaver retired in 1985 with a lifetime winning percentage of .583. Still the sixth highest lifetime winning percentage of all MLB managers. In 1996 Earl Weaver was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Earl Weavers' stated philosophy was simple "Pitching, defense and the three-run homerun." His strategies were much more complex. He tailored his teams to allow him to achieve favorable matchups with substitutions. Earl was also a great judge of talent and an inovator. One of the many innovations Earl pioneered was his use of statistics. He kept index cards with statistics and notes on all the players on opposing teams.

Really? I would have said that was from "Smokey and the Bandit". I didn't know bikers even used CB radios. To me the iconic line from Easy Rider is when Wyatt says, " I never wanted to be anybody else".
Have not seen Smokey and the Bandit but wife and I have always joked about this line since we saw EZ Rider like 20 years ago...

I have been wanting to share a little of this WW II history, and after reviewing some of my documents find that this first 48 day journey of the 743 Tank Battalion, as depicted in this flyer, would have ended approximately today (7/18). They landed on Omaha Beach on June 5 1944 which would make today about the 79th year anniversary of the end of this initial part of the invasion.

I know this is hard to read but this depicts the first 48 days of the invasion (above). At least the pictoral is there. I have an original copy thanks to my Dad and Great Uncle;

These are familiar locations for some. Makes the problems of today look pretty small.
