With your broad knowledge and experience, I would say you'll be a very useful person to have on here, but my first thought when reading your intro, I was reminded of a TV ad promoting tourism to down this way of a few years ago which featured a young lady on a beach in a bikini asking potential tourists "Where the b****y hell are ya?!!.

In your case, we could ask "Where the b****y hell have you been all this time?!!

Anyway, welcome and enjoy.

One Scale Rule

Welcome Bob. You do know that you have to pick one scale and stick with it now, don't you?
OMG I must have missed that rule when I was about 12 yrs old. Started with American flyer S scale. That was great until the " Jones'" kid got an HO set, then I had to try that. You remember that phase don't you?

Where have I been?

I,ve been a modeler a long time but side tracked with a vicious divorce for about 10 years. Funny how in California the Judges care more about making money for the Lawyers than they do for anything else including the safety or welfare of children. Don't let their BS and speeches fool you. Nothing means more to them than money and their friendships with the other Lawyers.
Anyway. I never considered myself any expert on railroading. I've never been one who was exacting about consists or make ups of trains. I like to operate trains. I model Western Railroads because thats where I have lived. I mainly love steam. Love the sound , smell, action, etc. Deisels never did much for me. Call me old fashioned. But thats what I like.
I'm just now getting online ehre because I just found out it's here. Funny, many of these website wanted to charge people to log on a few years ago. so I never joined in. Now I am joining because it's free.:)

There was a "push" here at one time to make it harder to get married and cheaper and easier to get divorced, but you can guess who resisted that move can't you.

Sorry My Friend

I just now noticed your Down Under. Great Place. I think the Gold coast there is much like California, but not as many liberals< haahaha. Are there any Steam Trains left running there? I know you have a great network of commuter trains.

QR still runs steam excursions from Brisbane during the school holidays (4 per year) which if I'm quick I can see as it leaves the station not far from me and there's a 2' gauge short railway not far to the west also which is based on sugar cane/industrial equipment. The Durundur Railway

QL railroads

Thanks for the feeds to your Railroads. Nice to see the 2 ft Steamer in action. Definately not many of those left around. What was it used for in it's day?
The Pacific Looks very clean along with the cars. Sounds great too but I hear a little rod clank.
Very nice.
I tried to upload some photos I took last weekend here. Hopefully you will see Southern Pacific 2472 in action.

I wonder if any of them looked as clean and shiny in revenue service as they do now in tourist duty (or when they first rolled out of the shops). The loco, the coach behind and the scenery could almost be a scene from my home country, New Zealand, where steam followed US practice and appearance from very early on even though most locos were built in Britain. The most notable exception being the K, Ka and Kb 4-8-4's of the early to late 1930's that were built in NZ.

I'll have to ask at my club (AMRA Qld) about the 2'er at Durundur as there are several members involved in that project as well.

Common Features of Steam

Pleasure to meet you here. Sounds like you and I have alot in common. I have also been to your Native NZ. I flew there with the US Air Force a few times. In fact one of my friends married a woman from there and lives there now. Yes NZ is beautiful from what I saw. Unfortunately I never got to be a tourist there. Never enough time. But friends who did get time there loved it.
So how do you root when the Football teams are in competition there? LOL. That is such a rivalry. A classic in the world.
About the equipment in my photos. This local railroad here is all volunteers and donations. No government money. So the cars are in need of good paint on the outside but serviceable. It is the Golden Gate Historical Railroad Society. Fancy name HUH? They do great work. Sure is great to see and hear that Loco run. Accucraft, a live steam manufacturer is going to make that model in 2014 they tell me. They currently are waiting for delivery of a Southern Pacific 2-6-0 type with Vanderbuilt tender. I have seen that 2-6-0 Live Steam prototype model run and it is sweet. 1/32 scale.

Ah yes, kiwi girls marrying US servicemen. One of my cousins was a WW2 bride and went to America at wars end, did very well for herself in realty.

Footy and sport, you never do really lose your loyalty to the home team or sportsperson. If there's someone from NZ competing say, at the Olympics, then they're the one/s that get the cheers, but if not, and especially if it's the Aussie swimmers against the US......well that's another great rivalry.

That little railroad I showed has struggled along in the same way, relying on it's enthusiasts and support from the public. The model club I belong to has managed for a long time now to support itself from the proceeds of an annual model train show held in the RNA showgrounds in Brisbane, but has had to shift to a different venue because of redevelopement of the site and while some of the conditions are less favourable, (3 levels instead of 1, not quite so close to the city centre and only over 2 days instead of 3) at least it does offer more modern facilities and a bonus of lots of free parking. We've all got our fingers crossed that the public will come along and continue their support.

Railroad Modeling, Kids, and Benny Hill

Glad to hear your club is getting along. Yes, it's tough to compete with the instant gratification of video games and online chatting the kids do nowadays. I always found modeling to be very gratifying in that it builds skills and knowledge. One learns to be an draftsman, engineer, carpenter, electrician, artist, painter and many other useful skills, all while enjoying a hobby they love. What other hobby has all that? Certainly video games of distruction and mayhem don't teach much. Chatting and texting is just social hour and gossip, and can create more tension between supposed friends than physical sports competition. Thanks, I'll stick to Model Railroads, I can usually figure out what went wrong when it does or get some knowledgable help here in this passtime without too much stress.
Somehow we have to convey to kids that this is something we can offer them that is better and more useful to them. Maybe we need a Child psychologist to tell us how to do that? LOL.

On another subject. you might get a kick out of this. I forgot to include this photo taken at the Steam run of 2472 last weekend. you probably remember the "Benny Hill" Tv show. One of my favorites for sure. Well, my wife took this photo of this guy in front of the Loco. If had I noticed him, I certainly would have made a comment to him. Well.... now I can't get the photo attached. I'll try again after I figure out why. I even deleted some earlier photo to make space, but it won't load. Sorry.
Have a great week.
