Hi all from the U.K

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Mark - Welcome to the Forum!

As to your BN & Santa Fe units running together, yes, yes and yes. Here in Chicago, (all roads led to Rome, all railroads led to Chicago), you can see most any combo lashed together. I know it took a while for equipment to move out of home territory after the merger, but I'm sure it happened. Particularly here where the Eastern terminus of both were within a mile of each other.
Anyway, don't sweat it, have fun! If it didn't happen, make it up. After all, it's our little fantasy world isn't it?

Are you sure you're not a wargamer Gary? :)

That's wargames talk mate!

But seriously, the Chicago area would be good for getting that 'look' that I'm after...

No Mark, I'm not a wargamer. But I think I like the way they think!

Chicago is a great place for modeling inspiration, as long as you're OK with FLAT! No mountains for a thousand miles but plenty of rail action.

Well if you stick with the late 80's or even the early 90's you can get away with just about anything in the form of lease units. I've seen trains go through northern Montana with no 2 locos in the lashup the same colour or owner. The same goes for the mid-train units. The only BN locos were the helpers.

As for the north or midlands, anything outside the M25 is the untamed hinterland. :D

BTW are you planning on going to Kegworth later this month?

Kegworth?

1. What's going down?

2. Is that South of Sheffield (shudders)

Travelling's out for a while as the missus is quite ill...

Mark - Look up 'Sweethome Chicago model RR' on U-tube. I forget the guy's name but he's on your side of the pond. The layout is a narrow shelf like you're talking about and captures the flavor if not the reality of large city American railroading. Amazing work.

Mark, sorry to hear about SWMBO, hope she gets better.

Kegworth is the location of the NMRA British Region Convention. Somewhere near Derby. Runs from the 22-24 of Oct. Basically its a 3 day jolly of North American trains, clinics, modelling contests, bring & buy tables, and 16 layouts. http://www.nmrabr.org.uk/annual-convention
