Wow, I'm a totally noob here but I never knew the depth this hobby has. Started out buying my 7 year old son a HO Bachman kit 2 years ago, made a flat table(4x6 - was in the garage cut and ready...), built a few buildings. Went to a recent train show and was blown away by what I saw.

Now I'm nurturing a potentially new addiction.

Seems I have some more reading to do first. General goal is to build an interesting layout, tunnels and bridges with scenery for me and running trains for the kid. I do like several of Mike's small track plans.

Thinking now of selling off the HO and going to N scale just to be able to get more in a smaller layout than I can with HO. I'm not married to a 4x8 but also don't want something to complex as this is our starting point. maybe an L shape 3' wide so it's easier to reach across.

Write at you later.

Sounds like fun! There are lots of model railroaders in the Portland area, and several clubs as well. I'm a member at the Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club where we have meetings on Tuesday nights, and public shows in November. It's an HO scale club. Mostly old dudes though there are some younger guys there too. Children are really not advised on non-public days as we don't do a lot of 'running trains' except for show days. Typically it's just time spent working on the massive layout.

I've personally been thinking of doing an N scale layout at home. The nice thing about N scale is you can build a layout on a shelf that you can reach the whole thing from one edge, and run a loop of track. In HO scale the table has to be so wide that you can't reach across it. This helps if there are space constraints.
