I have a MTH that smokes, but it needs DCS. I plan on taking it back and find something that is DCC that smokes,I am into UP.So it must smoke with sounds in DCC.I am looking new or used or even a DC one..Being my set up is DC for now.I looked at fea bay and could not find nothing as in used.I would like a used one in DC. If anyone know where I can find a good used one that smoke or I put a smoke unit in it but it would have to easy to put one in.Just Pm me

Thanks for looking

While the smoke looks very cool it can become a track maintenance nightmare as the residue gets on everything and can make the rails slick requiring more locos to pull a train of even 12 or 15 cars, fewer cars if passenger.

I have the MTH J9000 (4-12-4) with sound and syncronized smoke. I think its the best thing I have seen so far despite it being a DCS decoder. I have Digitrax and will have to give up some of the features of the DCS decoder, but at least the smoke and sound operate.

A few in our local club run their Lionel/MTH trains at our train shows. They have a few of the recent locos, steam and diesel, that have large reservoirs to hold smoke fluid, and the locos actually have fans that blow out a whole lot of smoke. The smoke was too much for most of the rest of the members in our club and some vendors, even when our train shows were set up in large school gyms or rented halls. You could smell it all through the place after a short while. Some members were sensitive to the smoke, making them cough and feel uncomfortable. So we asked them to turn down the smoke, and they don't use it much if at all these days.

Can't imagine anyone wanting to use such smoking locos in the home environment, the room would quickly become polluted with the smoke if there wasn't a major ventilation system. Keep in mind we're not talking about the older Lionel smokers that used pills, they puffed out little bits of smoke. These newer ones churn out the smoke like an old factory.

To each his own I guess.

Why does nobody offer an AC4400 with smoke?? Maybe cant get enough to bellow out the stack? I have seen some of them blowin more then any steam loco ever would...

The only reason for that much smoke would be if the unit was either broken or not properly maintained. With current Federal emmissions regs so strict, there will be less and less smoke, especially from modern diesels.

I know...I was just bein a lil sarcastic. We have a number of the origional AC4400's that sometimes have electrical problems and it looks like they are pumpin a gallon a shot thru them injectors. We had to isolate one once cause it was filling the ditches with black smoke...couldnt see anything at all it was so heavy...

A couple of friends and I went down to Irondale Al, the site of Norris Yards on the NS. The city built some platforms to allow the public a place to watch the trains coming in and out of the yards. One night we saw a train coming in the had several GE units on it and one of them was spitting a nice flame out of the stack to a height we estimated at well over 4'. Quite a sight!
