Welcome to the forums Michaeljoe.! I started out with a Bachmann starter set a couple years ago myself. I use the original set around the Xmas tree now with some Christmas cars that I've purchased. The main layout is the "gateway drug" for me.

I use Bachmann track under the Christmas Trees for that very reason.

I just got a new Bachmann HO train set, and some extra track. First set since I was about 10 years old.
I plan on putting it under the tree this Christmas, hope this works.
I choose Bachmann because the track is raised above the surface, carpets and such.

For me I would describe it as a Rabbit Hole, a magical place I never want to leave.

The entrance to my Rabbit Hole was found under the Christmas Tree Train.
