Hi folks! Model railroading newbie here just getting my feet wet. I'm an electrical engineer by schooling (Purdue '90), but work mostly in software these days (embedded Linux). This is my first time at model railroading, although I've done a fair amount of modeling in cars and airplanes, particularly in my youth. Right now, I'm just reading, researching and absorbing - that's how I roll with new hobbies. But I'll be jumping into a layout soon, once I get a few of the obvious decisions made about scale and focus.

Other hobbies of mine include shooting/hunting, all manner of outdoor activities like hiking and climbing, ham radio, electronics and computers, woodworking, and collecting (and using) vintage Double Edge, Single Edge and Straight razors.

I look forward to getting to know the community. Like all newbies, I have some questions, but I'll reserve those for the appropriate forums. I'm glad to be here!

Welcome to the forums!
Sounds like you're on the right track, research before jumping in is a good thing and your previous modeling will certainly come in handy.
Tried a straight razor once, bled for days!

Welcome aboard. You are probably doing the right thing by doing some planning. Here's a link to one post we had about HO or N scale that may help you with your decision.

I have modeled in both scales, but there are a lot of good posts there. Looking forward to seeing you on the forum often. Don't hesitate to ask questions. There are a lot of modelers here and by asking, you may be able to save a few bucks.
