Hello all, Tom from North Carolina. I'm very excited to finally be able to engage in modelling. It's hard to find the time when you're busy raising kids, but eventually there comes a time when the nest is empty, the house is too quiet and you have nothing but time on your hands. There also comes a time when you accept this new phase of life, complete with grandkids to fill the void with new and wonderful pitter-pattering of little feets, and begin to enjoy growing older. For me, that time is now and when the house isn't echoing with little voices calling for "Pop Pop", it's time to create. I have 2 main passions in my life... making music and scale modeling. I can't really call my love of trains a passion, that's built in... it comes stock from the factory. I look forward to meeting many of you and learning, sharing and celebrating everything trains. Very happy to be here :)

Welcome Tom! I am not sure about the 'enjoy getting old' part. To me it is 'enjoying being vertical' during the getting old part. The good thing about grandkids is you are able to send them home when you ears start to hurt! Just remember to send them home with love AND a drum set, toy push mower or the like. Revenge!

What scale are you going to start with? How much room do you have? There is a wealth of knowledge here and lots of info. Any questions will be answered; most of the time with thought involved.

Thank you much. I'll be modeling N scale. I'm limited to 28" x 8ft, but most of my track will be obscured by trees and a ravine. It'll be totally enclosed with only a 5 foot wide, 26ish inch tall viewing area. Kinda like a "shadow box" model railway. The frame is an old repurposed auto parts steel rack 5' wide x 30" deep with a horizontal Unistrut frame attached that will extend 1.5 ft on both sides supporting the layout, and another identical Unistrut frame on the top that'll support a lightbox. Everything unseen will be covered with wood panels held to the frame by magnets for easy removal. It's all in my head, right now, but the railway will only be a simple oval with 1 siding. Standard DC with separate power for lights and electronics.

Here's a pic of the stand to give you a better idea of what it'll look like.
