Next step in the loader build is rig the car cable that pulls the log car from underneath the machine, to be loaded. I used 0.5mm Rigging line from Model Shipways to wrap both drums to simulate cable. Then I used 0.2mm line for the car cable, off the front drum, over the front roller, around the sheave on the front axle, cut & glued underneath. The instructions for this cable, is a side blurb on one of the drawings, so I missed it when I initially read thru the instructions. The sheave is not furnished with the kit, but because I am using a sheave block on the end of the boom, I had the sheave that was intended for that purpose. I drilled & cut it for the front axle. I made sure the gap was on the back side of the axle when the two pieces were glued together.
I had been waiting on the wire for the boom truss rods, four required, tuff to photograph, because I had somewhere bent the originals.
With those installed I could now rig the boom. The instructions call for the boom sheave to be 23ft above the rail, I made it 25ft. (That's the way I am)
First, the tongs. The McGifferts In this area, used a tong on each end of the log, not the scissors tongs to load with. I ordered another set of tongs and cut them to give me two separate tongs. They are molded in one piece.
In my parts box I had a piece of three link chain for the end of the boom line and the two tong lines.
The log car shown has the highest load of all the log cars. I needed to check and see how much of the boom line (lead) there is between the top log and sheave. I am undecided as of yet as to what position the loader will be in, just starting to load a car, or placing the last log on top.
Happy Modeling!
