Working on my first layout and I have a question about landscape. I obviously want to incorporate some hills into the layout. I was wondering if anyone has bought the pre made hills with tunnels and turned them into a mountain by covering the tunnels, or is it easier to make the hills/mountains out of foam, or used molds and made them out of plaster? Thanks!!!
Go with foam. You can find scraps for free in many cases and you can stack it and cut it however you like.

I posted this in another forum here. Like you, I'm a total noob and doing the research. I found this vid on YouTube to be extremely helpful. I just built a test scenery on a 2'x3' just to learn and play. Good fun, totally customizable and lets your imagination run wild.

Have fun.

Here's what I built in about 8 hours over 2 days with foam. One coat of paint, no detailing, grass, seam hiding or water - yet. Fun first attempt. Great to make my mistakes and learn here before the layout. I also learned a lot on how to produce the required results. Total test cost = ~$80 all in, 2 Home Depot trips...
Sorry about the poor image quality - night and kids...
