hi guys i am at a complete stand still all the track work is done but now i dont know what i want on the layout in terms of scenery and buildings dont even know where to start very frustrating do any of you have an idea on what i should do where. will appreciate it a lot you can even add pics of other L shape layouts i just need an idea on where to start with the scenery and buildings thank you

To create some hills and mountain scenrey. Get some of the pink or blue extruded foam at Home Depot.

Cut it up and stack it. Glue pieces using latex caulk. Then using a kitchen knife, shape it tell it looks good. Then get some Woodland Scenics sculptold. Slather it all over the mountain. Then paint it a light brown, with some grey as well. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle in some green Woodland Scenics grass.

For buildings, you could create a small town. Create some roads. You have plenty of room in the middle of your layout for all of this.

Woodland Scenics has a complete set you can buy. It has like 15 buildings for an entire town. Its really nice.

And here's the road kit they have: http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/RG5151/page/1

Hey Guy,

Glad to see you back on here. I remember you from earlier this year. Check out Motleys track rework thread in layout and design, he used sheet rock mud and sand; etc. for some very realistic landscaping.

Also, the advice on the woodlands scenic materials is good. I use a lot of their stuff. Natural materials can be blended in, as well.

Pick out a couple major industries, town themes, or something to build on to.

Don't worry, anything you decide you don't like, you can re do.

Keep us posted,
Thanks, logandsawman

Will your railroad service any industries on the layout? Is the town large enough to have a station, or a passenger + a freight station? What about vegetation? Trees, bushes, cacti? Where are you trying to represent/model? Australia? Europe? North America? And which season?

My layout is free lance so i dont have a specific area that i want to model it does have a small passenger station and the town in still in progress so the vegetation will come at a later stage and i have no industries

It's always fun to see layouts take shape. You're off to a great start.

One suggestion I would make is to rethink your town arrangement. Instead of having the road be parallel to the track on the inside -- which calls more attention to the oval track -- design a small grid of streets that is at one end of the oval, and perhaps cuts across it at an angle.

Here are a couple of examples clipped from track plans I saw on the Internet, just to show what I mean.

You can probably find other examples for inspiration just by googling "Model Railroad Track Plans" and looking at the images.

Have fun!
