Re: RC (Farewell's book). That is exactly the photo I was thinking of, the monster mid-train helper set, but couldn't remember where I had it--which book. Should have realized it was that one, because it's all black and white photography (headslap).
If you've read a few of my post, you probably know by now I use way too many "quotation marks", too many...ellipses...as well...........
....but RC outdoes even me. I had a few chuckles the first time I read through his text, not the least of which was "bigfoot" to describe the rather unique Rio Grande SD40T-2 fleet. Still, I get it.
I stopped in "Minnern" a few months back and found the old Turntable Cafe, where many of the railroad crews used to eat, and had lunch. The railroad art and even the G-scale loop that runs near the ceiling all the way around the room are still there, but it was sold to a Mexican family after the line was abandoned. They are trying to make a go of it, but, and as mexican food goes, it was average at best, and pretty pricey. The old vibe is just gone now, so wouldn't go back to eat again.
However the track is still in place all the way over the top of the grade and down the Arkansas river on the other side too, so the area still has it's ghosts, and occasionally you can spot one. Or just hear them in the wind.
I will certainly go back for them.
