Eureka Models NSWGR AD60 Beyer Garratt - Video

Definitely one of the more unusual locomotives you might see, even more unusual to see one running on a U.S. railroad. You're going to have to suspend your disbelief and ignore all of the Americana in the landscape while you watch this video, especially you prototype buffs. The model in this video is factory weathered, and it's pulling a mixed consist of 30 NSWR LCH/CCH coal hoppers, trailed by a "guards wagon" bringing up the rear.

Beyer Garrett

I grew up with those babies in Rhodesia. For those of you that are not familiar with the Garrett, the large water tender in front is necessary to make the long runs between water stops in Africa and Australia.
They are still in limited use now in what is now called Zimbabwe, they have vast quantities of coal but can't afford to import diesel fuel.
As for "ugly" I think they are fantastic looking, but then I am biased??
Where can I get one of those??
Thanks for the video.

Eureka Models just finished a second run of the AD60 Garrets this month and are shipping now. Go to http://eurekamodels.com.au/Garratt.html. On ther home page they also have a link to their blog that has some photos of their latest re-runs

I have a HO GMAM Garrat, and even though I model US railroads, I couldn´t resist it!
They have a rugged charm that is hard to describe....

In mid June I rode behind two Garratts on the New Welsh highland Railway in Wales U.K.
These are 2 ft gauge South African locos and run from Porhmadog to Caernarfon aver 25 miles of hilly and very scenic countryside.
Well worth a visit if you are in the UK.
Colin.

Hi Colin.
Just a small point, all of South African, and in fact Southern African railways run on 3' 6" gauge.
Come to think of it, the 3' 6" gauge runs all the way up to Dar Es Salam on the east coast, also through the Congo to Lobito Bay on the west coast.
Now I am getting out of my depth, got to check my facts before I put my foot in it.
Have a good one.
Mac

I like it... it's a different sort of train design than we're used to seeing.

The scenery that the train is running through is rather good too. It's clear that you put a lot of work into this layout.

Hi Mac,
The WHR locos are from the Alfred County Railway which ran from Port Shepstone on the Indian Ocean to Harding.
This was 2 ft gauge ( converted from 3ft 6in in 1911-1917) and ran for a total of 77 miles.
The WHR locos are class NGG16 and they have three of them, two coal fired and one oil. They also have at least one NG15 2-8-2 loco.
I believe that there are more of these garratts in the country but I do not know where they are.
Earlier this year there was a display of articulated locos on the WHr and Ffestiniog railways with Garratts, a Mallet and Double Fairlie articulated locos working together. I think that this is the first time that this variety of articulated locos has beeen seen together.
By the way the Mallet ( Indonesian) runs on a track about 4 miles from my house !
Hope this explains.
Regards, Colin.
