ONE TRACK MIND
I was looking through the threads, couldn't really find anything on actual ditch light advice. I have a couple questions. First being anyone have good ideas for brands of preferred ditch lights. Im looking for modern GE and EMD. Second, Ive purchased some micro LEDS for such application. Any feedback on those? Just for good luck, has anyone used the railflyer brand? Having a very difficult time finding ditch lights that speak to my needs.

Hello.

I have used the Railflyer ditch lights, at least the ones that are mounted above the deck for CN units. They are very well designed and are a little tough to build, but the effect is worth it. I didn't use Railflyer leds for it, as I had small leds already in my workshop.

Excellent! Mind if i ask how the heck you found instructions on how to assemble these? Finished product looks good, assembly seems to be a different story!

As for fiber optics, any good tutorials out there that you can recommend? Wouldn't mind seeing how that works!

Details West DL-228 housings, drilled out for Ulrich micro LED's, powered by NCE decoders, works for me!

Hello. I found these instructions Railflyer put on their Google site. They're not the best instructions, but if you print out the parts layout and look at the photo provided, they do give some idea of what goes where.

Assembly isn't too bad. If you have the skills to solder magnet wire to very small leds, you should be able to build this kit with no problem. Just make sure you cut the parts off on a clean surface (no other stuff around) and try not to lose any parts. They do often fly off when you're cutting them out. That's experience talking, by the way... :p

As for fiber optics, I'd avoid them. With the price of the 0402 and 0603 leds on eBay, I'd go with them. I haven't had much luck with fiber optics, but I have been able to do a lot with light emitting diodes.

Hope I've been helpful.
