Dishonest Item Description on Ebay?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I recomment finding a setting most browsers have to dump cookies on exit. They are still annoying but for the most part it is anonymous metadata, it is a bit creepy, but the way retail & interest cookies work is not (usually) as bad as many people think.
But still, it is kinda annoying and "creepy".
The other thing i reccommend is if you use chrome, get a second google account for general browsing and a personal one for everything else. It then will ask you "who is using chrome". You can also have 2 or more accounts open at same time.
This way your browsing/cookie metadata/stored passwords do not cross over as each account has it's own userspace. This means your ads will likely be different (and still SFW 😆), after any generally interested but not -so- interested browsing, political ranting or other online activity can be done in the other account.

Occasionally those offers pay off. Watch something that I am interested in and on occasion, a tempting offer comes through a few hours later. Helps if the item seems to have been on sale a while and the seller is keen to get it shifted and will take a discount but I let them take the lead, I would never make an offer to a seller myself.

Now, as for descriptions, here in the UK we are having a right old time pointing and laughing at the utter gibberish that is the AI generated descriptions (another tool for the lazy to get even lazier) which is straight out of eBay's Department of Stupid Ideas!!!

I've actually got some good deals using the "make an offer", you get three attempts, so I usually offer around 40% less (if it's not been overpriced to start with of course.)

Overall, I have had a wonderful experience with eBay. I found many things I would not have found anywhere else. Not without having to leave the comfort of my favorite chair. Many have been fantastic bargains, a few others, not so much. eBay's buyer protection has always saved the day. One downside is eBay makes spending money too easy!

As always, the old Latin phrase is true "Caveat emptor" - Let the buyer beware.

Speaking of the original topic...
I ordered a Golden Bear branded shirt from a seller on Ebay about three weeks ago. The seller waited until I opened a "did not receive" complaint before shipping, then sent a pair of used shoes instead of the new shirt. I then changed my complaint from "did not receive" to "not as described". The seller tried arguing "no returns", but Ebay provided me a shipping label for the return, and is forcing the seller to accept it.

It might be a good idea to post that seller's ebay name and info on this forum so the rest of us know to avoid doing business with them... That's some very shady stuff right there.

Dishonest Item Description on Ebay

Here primer example of a deceptive listing. Seller's listing: "Scale Structures LTD, SS Ltd style milk cans". (Look at that detail in the 1st photo! I ordered a pack.)

I received the "milk cans" in the 2nd photo.
I wrote the following to the seller: Milk cans arrived. You might mention plastic in your listing (SS LTD's are metal), also no handles like the ones you have pictured. So these have no resemblance (style) to Scale Structures milk cans.

Response from seller:
"the item description is advertised as "xxxx" explicitly stated if you bothered to read. We have offered these for over a decade and are installed on museum layouts and have proudly published in modeling magazines worldwide. They are great details for any railroad PERIOD"

The seller in no way addressed my issues. Instead makes an arrogant comment it's my fault for not reading the manufacture. What? Look at Photo 1 vs Photo 2 - PERIOD!

I wrote Scale Structures. They tell me they had previously contacted the seller and Ebay but neither seemed to care that the seller was using SS LTD's name in their listing.

Bottom line. Buyer beware. "milk cans" are being returned! Oh, these were $10.99 for 12. These appear to be Tichy's $6.00 for 45, that are painted silver.

There, my Fathers Day rant. Everybody have a Happy Father's Day!

Now that I have clicked on the listing, the seller has sent me an offer thinking I'm interested 🤣 🤣 🤣

Anybody else get one?
I get those all the time. Usually ignore them.

Ebay has been pretty good otherwise. If a product was misrepresented I always get my money back.

The worst was when I got a bad review (neutral) when I sold a good running 0-4-0 for $8.00. Ran out great on my track, which I videoed. My track is obsessively cleaned and you need that for these little locos. Also posted 8 pics. I will guess he had dirty tracks or power gaps in his switches.

Just a heads up... This seller has what appears to be a Lionel brand HO scale Burlington Northern caboose listed as a NEW Tyco caboose in a Tyco box with foam shipping "peanuts" inside the Tyco box. The road number is 9860?, which matches my Lionel BN caboose (98601), and mine is clearly marked Lionel on the bottom of the caboose. The seller has other "NEW" model trains listed that have the foam shipping peanuts inside the boxes.

I'm not saying that the seller is intentionally trying to misrepresent the items. He or she might not know what they have. Use your best judgement and ask questions.

Here's the caboose listing, to show you what caught my eye
I don't buy from ebay but anything that says Vintage and New I stop looking, because It's usually used and people are looking to put a higher price on it because it's not as exciting.
