Well im sure ive made up my mind, but ill leave the poll up and see what you all think.

Dont ask why i put cotrollers in the poll, i ment just decoders. (sheesh i think its time for bed.)

SoundTraxx, hands down. Even before their Tsumani series became available, they were the only brand whose 1st-generation EMD decoders actually sound like a 567B priime mover, with a wider range of tuning options. I made the mistake of letting someone talk me into buying the Digitrax decoder that they made for the Kato SD38-2, and I was grossly dissappointed with it. It doesn't have separate CV settings for the prime mover exhaust -vs- the other engine noises, it can only be made to sound like you're standing inside the engine compartment.

BTW you need to go back and add some more choices [such as QSI, etc.], and get rid of the word "controllers" - I almost didn't vote on this poll because I thought it was about full DCC systems

Soundtraxx would be the better sound decoder in my opinion. The only benefit to Digitrax would be the ability to change the sound completely but most likely once you put a decoder in a loco it is there to stay.

ok i assume everyone is saying soundtraxx due to sound? I havent really made up my mind if im gonna run sound or not.

Im leaning twords no sound, if thats the case im gonna venture to say digitrax would be the more cost efficent way to go?? Im thinking just basic DCC, or am i wrong and soundtraxx is better even if i dont care if it has sound or not.

Also what would ya reccoment for controller systems, ive been looking at prodigy, digi, ect...

and it seems to me that digitrax is the most compatable.

I tried to edit it but cant figure out how to edit the poll, anyone know how?

If you are not going sound, you certainly don't need Soundtraxx. Don't make up your mind, sound or no sound, because of complexity. All sound decoders have basic settings inline with the standard decoders and their complexity. Lots of good standard decoders: Digitrax, NCE, etc. If you go sound, go with the best or you will regret it = Soundtraxx.

At this point and time i realy dont care about sound, maybe a while down the road & thats prolly a long while, i need to start focusing on getting the layout up and running,

but then that would me getting my basement room done lol.

That's understandable. As I said, lots of good standard decoders out there. That should be the subject of your poll or question, but I'm sure many will reply with their recommendations on standard decoders. ;)

Warning! If you try sound, you won't want anything but sound. LOL :D

yeah i shoulda made it a lil more clear as far as what i ment. When i made this post i shoulda did a lil more research. I didnt understand that all soundtraxx decoders were with sound, but i guess thats where the name comes from lol.

but thanks so far for everyones thoughts. Basiclly if your going sound, soundtraxx is the way to go. If your not going sound well theres a bunch of good choices.

That being said....DigiTrax

I just put a DH165LO in a lifelike GP9,and added a soundbug module to it. Total cost, less than $70 bucks, including a 0.62 inch speaker.

Sounds pretty good to me. Sound volume moves up and down with the throttle, and it's got all the fancy CV options.

Plus, you can download different sounds from the digitrax website, and change them if you don't like it.

Soundtraxx and Tsunamis are too darned expensive. And new locos with sound cost $279 and up? No thanks, when I can convert an older loco to sound for $70 clams.
