Item on Ebay right now with the wavy handrails. I've sent a question to the seller asking if they were like this new??
This was his reply:
Hello and thank you for your inquiry. As indicated in our listings **, the nylon used for the handrails along the hood was too soft and these models are often found with wavy handrails. It appears some of these models had the problem from packing at the factory, while it is always possible some were affected by handling by the customer as well.

...more like a factory response....when in doubt, blame it on the customer

**one Achilles’ Heel of this series is that the handrails along the body are made of a soft plastic and are almost always found with a wavy pattern as can be seen in the scan. This particular model was displayed briefly on a static diorama and has never been used on a layout; therefore it is in like-new condition in a clean original box

Like I said earlier, this was a first run isue only. Later runs did not have the problem.

As for the split gear issue, Nope! Very different materials, and caused by an undersized bore. When the axles were pressed in, the fit was too tight, and the gears would eventually fail. A much discussed and well documented issue that has also been resolved by the manufacturer. They gave away thousands of free replacements. Most common on their GP-18, SD-9 and early E units.

For the railing, I'd say if it's a recent issue, don't worry about it. If an early issue, it will probably be evident in the box.
