MGWSY- Do you work for the NECRR? Was that building abandoned or were there people inside at the time?

Yes I do and the Building was used by a Co. but no one was inside when the derailment happened. Cause was due to a shifted load in the TBOX.

Some pics from work

Cool! Ive considered being a locomotive engineer after college, not really sure what to study for in college that would help me in that field though.

I am not sure what college courses you can take as you will still have to do the same RR training and work as a conductor before being an engineer like any other new hire.

Humor on the Atlas forum? It exists? :D

Yes from a few members, I was pretty much told I am an idiot and a disgrace as a RR employee to find something like a derailment funny. Ah well. LOL I guess thats that then as Atlas is the final say, time to go cry in the corner for an hour, LOL

See enough of them and thats all you have left is humor. And yes main thing in any incident is no gets hurt physically, emotionally maybe, but not physically..

Mark.... as long as no one gets hurt you can just scratch your head and laugh at the situation...then its BACK TO WORK!

About 10 years ago I was dumping a load at a Dump site when I watched a Friend roll over his dump truck as the bed was rasing. I thought he would come out all banged up and hurt. 10 sec after the truck fell to its side and I was running for him. he poped out the driver side door window with a face full of mud. I was worried at first but then started laughing at the situation after all was ok. He was fine besides a face full of mud that had splashed thru the passenger side window. We just stood there for a few taking in the moment and then the cussing started LOL

Happens quite often in yards. Worn switch points and sharp wheel flanges can cause major headaches. Imagine this happening at 40 or 50mph.
No thanks! I've seen the aftermath of such a derailment firsthand. What a mess that was! It was a military train at that (10th Mountain Div).

I used to drive a semi OTR. I have seen all kinds of accidents. I, too, have reached the point where I can laugh about them as long as no one got hurt!

Man...train wrecks on my layout never end up like that. They always fall off the earth and smash about 800 yards below on something call the "ground".

Wow!

That was crazy.... When I was kid around 1989 or so I was fishing by the maumee river bridge where conrail go's over and I walked up to watch a track crew grind a frog ( hope that was right) and all of a sudden a piggy back train came in and just blew the track grinder off the rails. It was incredible. I watched in total disbalief as the machien look like a toy. most of it went into the river and the track guys (two of them) jump'd at the last second and made it. The train had a hole in the fuel tank of the second locomotive. These dues were like all emotional. helped as I could but when the very nice Conrail officials showed up they told me to get off the property or I would be arrested. I should say the official used some nasty words on me. I was not on the property when it got hit only after to help but I guess they did not want a witness. Funny becuse I was only 17 and getting ready to leave for Army basic training in a few months so I just left. i bet to this day most of that track grinder or whatever you call it is still in the river. The engineer needed a hug he was so horrified by what happened. I remmber the track guys saying someone was goign to get fired becuse they were given a work order or something like that. Even my dad and uncles did not bilive me when i told them what i witnessed and they were all rail road engineers and brakemen!~ GOD BLESS ALL

They weren't too bright. If they had arrested you, it would then be all over the news and they wouldn't be able to cover it up.

If I had been the CR officials I would have told you to get off the property too. They already have a very expensive machine destroyed and an investigation to find out who violated a main track authority, that's about as serious a situation as you can get. They don't need civilians wandering around an accident scene and possibly getting hurt too.

That's a serious rules violation and doubt any railroad official would be in a good mood.

Just because they told somebody to get off the property doesn't mean they are trying to "cover up" anything.

Well, this didn't make the news as far as I know, neither did the railfan community know much if anything about it, so I would say that it was covered up.

Second of all, if someone was injured, I don't care whether I am trespassing or not, I will go over and see if they are ok. This isn't a war. Conrail didn't plant land mines on their property.

In all my years of reporting incidents, in all the lists of alphabet soups of state and Federal agencies that have to be notified in case of accidents, in all the reams of forms and papers and reports, I never once came across "Call all the local railfans" as step in the process.

So basically if you don't know about it, then its being covered up. Kinda broad definition of "cover up" doncha think?
