New to model rr. Need some advice as to what system to go for dcc control started laying track but am now caught up on what to purchase for a start. Layout on 4 X 8. Would like to run two engines and perhaps expand later.Looking at Digitrax SEBX Empire Builder starter set. Anybody recomend anything else:confused:

If you are only going to have a 4x8 layout I cannot see any reason for anything more than a Digitrax Zephyr Xtra or its equivalent.

The Zephyr should be able to meet all of your needs at a little cheaper price. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't believe so.

It met mine on a former layout and I am using another one for my 4 x 6 layout that is in progress. Best $170 DCC system IMO

If I remember correctly, the DB150 is best used as a booster due to the fact that it lacks CV read capability. Honestly, I've never figured out why Digitrax offers the Super Empire Builder set at all. For a small layout, I'd also suggest the Zephyr.

I had a Zephyr, and loved it. I use a lot of sound equipped engines with the higher functions, so I sold the Zephyr, and bought a Zephyr Xtra. I've had nothing but problems with it. In fact, it is on its way back to Digitrax for the 4th time as I type this (delivery day is Tuesday). It has given me hours and hours of headaches. Multiple calls to tech support, and problems galore. So much so, I went out and bought a DB150, which has been a vast improvement.
So, long story short, unless you are using engines with a lot of sound features, try to find a NOS Zephyr (DCS50), rather than a Zephyr Xtra (DCS51). It will be more than enough for any small layout.

I have the new powercab also. And i love it. I think i payed 164 shipped from modeltrainstuff.com awhile back. Get yourself one i suggest, if not you cant go wrong with digitrax
