Been a bit busy today in between rain showers. I drew out some cloud shapes on 8 manilla folders then cut them out so I can use the folders as stencils. I've also been spraying down the Busch Hintergrund (Walther's #189-2872)http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/189-2872 backgrounds with Krylon Matte Finish. I'm doing this for 3 very good reasons. #1, the gloss finish is VERY unrealistic and #2, reflects any camera flash no matter the angle and #3, the Detail Associates add-on scene components are more matte than gloss. Having matte on matte will be much better than having the scenic black eye of matte on gloss. It also appears that I didn't measure right so I'll have to order another 189-2872 when it's in stock again. The have two other background scenes which includes buildings on them but they're way too European for my needs.

Drive-By-Posting......

Hey, I'm still alive! Job status, No Ray of hope yet:(! Last Saturday the lawn service was hopping:) and the same for this Saturday too!:):):) Chat later.....

Hey, Chris, I have a great idea for your lawn service. Get a herd of goats!!!! They can mow yards and you can milk 'em too. Get a "double whammy" income!!!

Jeffrey, you must be wore out!!! You need to remember the old saying, "Measure twice, order once." or something like that.

Time to get back to modeling, painting and weathering. I found some of the better half's eye shadow in the closet. I hope she won't miss it.

Evening gang!

Sandy and Larry, well keep the prayer line busy for ya! :)

Jeffrey Lookin better every day!! I do all my backdrops on cardstock, printed on my puter. Some are from commercially available photobackdrop CD's, some are photos that I have taken and stitched together in the computer. I mount them with 3M spray trim adhesive. Some of them are approaching 5 years old and even when stored in the trailer or the basement, I havn't had one peel yet.

Ken Thanks for noting the preference. Even though I am diabetic, I'd rather drink a regular coke than a diet pepsi.

Chris Keep growing that lawn service, and it wont matter what the state does!!! With all the bluehairs down there, you can't tell me they cut thier own lawns!!

Rex The wife does all my haircuts! You think your haircuts are expensive!! Try mine!!!!!! LOL:D

boB Eyeshadow for weathering?? Next thing your gonna tell me that 4 inch heels improve your layout access!:rolleyes::D

Midnight is keeping his distance tonight. Seems he got a few knots in his long coat, and I held him down while the wife brushed them all out. After 20 minutes of meowing like we were killing him and 2 failed attempts to bite me, he has retreated to a corner of the basement to sulk. :( It's kinda nice though, typing without a 13 pound cat on my lap!! :) By tomorrow he'll be back!

On the John Deere front. hurry, hurry get your 1:87 Deere tractors while you can. Athearn has lost the John Deere account and will stop producing the 1:87 models. 1:48 and 1:67 models are unaffected, as they are produced by Ertl.

Finally, my CSX road slug article in RMC has been bumped back to October, but is slated to also be the Dremel Award winner for the month. Cool, another Dremel!! ( I already have 4 of em!) :D

Catch y'all later

Evening, everyone.

What the heck did I do today? Oh, yeah, finally got the doctor to really order my Flomax today after lying about since Friday. I've had it with this guy. He wants to try me on Flomax because of my enlarged prostate. At $105 for a 30 day supply, it had better be a miracle drug or it's back to saw palmetto for me. I think works just as good anyway. I also finally go him to give me my PSA reading from last Friday. It's 2.4, which is normal but somewhat suprising, since I know I have (had) a prostate infection that contributed to my bladder problem. I had been taking Cipro for about 10 days though so that may have knocked the reading back to normal. I've been feeling fine with no problems so I expect to get a clean bill of health from the urologist when I see her on Sept. 4.

Jeffrey, sounds like your cloud stencils are coming along, even if the gas for the mower isn't. Looks like you're going to have a nice looking backdrop.

Karl, I'm addicted to diet Pepsi. don't ask me why, that chemical taste is just yummy. :) Our cats go nuts when I put Revolution on them, which is just some clear liquid that keeps away ticks and fleas. You'd think I was trying to kill them or something.

Chris, glad to hear you still have a job and that the lawn service demand is still there.

Ken, I know it's a worrisome time with your daughter overseas but they grow up fast when mom and dad aren't there to take of things. No worries about Hurricane Bill. Even though he's a Cat 4, he's headed north. away from land, although it's possible he may maintain at least minimal hurricane status all the way to Nova Scotia. I don't think they are too used to hurricanes in Nova Scotia.

The rest of the Atlantic is quiet since Ana has dissolved into a remnant low over the Bahamas and should bring the Bahamas and central Florida some rain. Nothing for us though. Had some scattered thunderstorms today but we got about three drops. Another chance for a few thunderstorms tomorrow and that's about it until at least Monday. But, no complaints. Any time you're not in the back of an ambulance peeing blood, like I was last week at this time, things are perfect. :D

OK, I've run into a problem. The number boards on an F7...... I don't have any F's here, with me to check....does the large side go to the front or to the side? I know, I should know this, but I'm old and feeble. Gimme a break. I've checked the web for some good views, but Mr. Murphy has edited them all. It's a PRR F7A, or it will be, it was undecorated before meeting with Mr. Krylon. I'd like to mount these before applying the decals, weathering and dullcoat.

Karl, you can keep the 'green', though I might buy up a few for an investment for later on. wait a year or two, put them on eBay and watch the nuts crack.

The tractors on my layout, are anything but green. There's gray ones(Ford), Red ones(IHC, McCormicks....), Yaller ones, blue 'uns, orange un's. But no green 'uns. I even have a couple of old Case steam ones, they's black un's. I have no idea how long I've had those. Found them in one of my "stuff" boxes.

Actually Karl, cheap eye shadow works quite well. Don't get the sparkly kind, though. And its cheaper than the weather powders at the hobby shop, and you have more colors to choose from. Some can be greasy too, stay away from those. Paint won't stick.

And I'm in need of a new Dremel, by the way. My old one is just about wore out. I still have my cordless one, but it isn't variable speed.

I, too, am diabetic, Diet Dr. Pepper is probably my favorite soda. But, I drink iced tea, so.........

Since you seem to enjoy large felines, I have a 22# monster to send you. He will dwarf Midnight without a doubt. He outweighs our female Boston Terrier by about 5#. BIG CAT!!! But, he is quite private and I vry rarely see him, except at meal tome....go figure.

Sandy and Larry, Still layin' down the prayers for ya both.

Big boomers an heavy rain passed through a bit ago. I'd forgotten what "nastys" were like, it's been that long since we had anything like that. North of us took a lickin' from what i understand.

'Nuff for now.

Bob

I also like Diet Dr. Pepper. Diet Pepsi tastes like the can it came in... Whatever you do, don't order the Southern Sweet tea, it's a diabetic coma in a glass.

I just looked at three F7 A units, two have the large part to the rear, one toward the front. none are Pennsy.

Well, two out of three......hmmmm. I'm thinking that the number boards should face more toward the front. But, I'll wait for some more replies. Paint is still a bit wet anyway. Give it some time to dry a tad more. Thanks for the reply, Terry.

Bob, Couple of problems with mowing with Goats.....

1. They mow the grass right down to the dirt! Thus killing the grass... Not good.

2. They eat evry thing even wanted plants......

3. I would constently replacing Goats due to theft. Our Mexican undocument works in this state are nortoious for stealing goats!

Evening gang!

Chris Keep growing that lawn service, and it wont matter what the state does!!! With all the bluehairs down there, you can't tell me they cut thier own lawns!!

My service would be better if the economy would pic up. There seems to be more and more people cutting grass to make ends meet these days! It drives the cost down and lowers the amout of accounts out there! the average 10,000 sqft yard nets ya $15 per mowing......Use to get $25:eek: The Q tips down here are getting smarter and are going condo!

The 5 Biggest business down here are:

Funeral Homes.

Doctors offices and hospitals

Banks

Auto Body Shops

Resturants (that offer early bird specials)

Good morning.

It's 77 and partly cloudy. The high will be in the mid 90's and there's a chance of rain.

I spent most of yesterday doing prep work. I drew and cut out eight 11"x17" stencils which I'll use to make clouds. I sprayed down all the Busch background scenes with Matte Finish to take the gloss off them and I rolled out and weighted down the Detail Associates scenery rolls so they'll lay flat instead of trying to roll up. If I have the time today I'll join the first two scenery panels together. Once the joint is dry I'll glue the scenery panel to the backdrop. The rate of progress will depend on what problems I encounter along the way.

Today's Weather for:

Chris - aside from the problems you already mentioned with goats, you also can't walk barefoot on the grass where they been ;)

bOB - Here's a few PRR F7A proto-photo links fer ye! As you can see, most of them had larger number boards toward the front. But I'm guessing it depends on either (a) the number series or (b) whatever year your modeling.

I have the house all to myself this morning; the rest of my family is at Bethany Beach, DE. There are lifeguards at the beach to warn about any wave effects from Bill so I'm not too terribly worried. (except for maybe my 17yr-old son, Calvin The Indestructible...!) The AC system in my house has been non-functional since Tuesday, but the repair company can't send a tech until Friday morning. The weather dart-throwers are predicting T-storms for the period he's supposed to show up, he better not reschedule!

Jeffrey,

Roll the scenery the other way to take the "memory" out. I learned that from an old guy that used to hang wall paper. It will reduce curl and roll up. You will want the scene on the inside of the roll when you apply it anyhoooo. That way you can concentrate on making sure it's even and straight.

The wise old birds must be sleepin' in today. Still need a bit of direction on which way to install the number boards on this F-unit. No directions, although there is paperwork with the unit.

It's a Bachmann Plus that was undecorated but is now ready for the add-ons, decals and weathering to be applied. Love that Krylon, that's for sure. I'm hoping to win a Kadee close coupling adaptor set on eBay. Got a few hours left yet. And I have to add the diaphragms between the units. I was looking to add a draw bar between the A and B units, but haven't had any luck in finding one. I thought I had one, but it must be at the other house.

Well the computer is done doing what it had to do. Time to run a couple of scans, at least start them, and head for the rack. It's been one screwed up night.

Bob

PS: Thanks ken

Good morning folks

It was 75 F when I walked out the door this morning and got punched in the face with the humidity. It was downright ugly and oppressive. High is supposed to be 90 F with a 50-50 chance of thunderstorms. There was one building to the west as I was driving into the office.

Last night we had a pack meeting for Cub scouts. We showed the boys that showed how to play volleyball. I also talked with the parent of a new scout and we went over some things with the Leaders for the coming year.

No trains last night.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good morning folks.

I've had a busy week getting caught up at work after being gone for five days. We had a great time at the lake with no major problems. There may be a little family fatigue, but that's nothing that a little time can't fix.

I was having problems with the way my Athearn heavyweights were tracking around the layout. I decided to replace the wheels with metal ones. Well, the wheels were a tad too short in length and made the problem worse. Then I found Athearn replacement trucks with metal wheels! I bought six sets off of ebay and couldn't be happier. They run like they've never run before. My only problem is having a bunch of 36" wheels from the first attempt. I put a few on some freight cars to see if it looked ridiculous, nope! Since most of my old rolling stock is Athearn BB kits from the eighties, they'll never be perfect anyway. They may as well roll better.:) I'm a happy man!

On a different note, I just purchased two tickets to ride on the Milwaukee Hiawatha train in October. This year the Southern Pacific 4449 will be running in the Milwaukee 261's place. The trip starts in Minneapolis and runs down the Mississippi River bluff to Winona. It's a three hour run down, two hour layover for lunch, then three hours back. If you've ever seen pictures of the river valley in October, you know how excited I am.

Anyway, that's what is new in my world. I hope you all have had a great week.

Mornin' all!

Got some nasty storms last night, but strangely enough, no service calls from it! We even had sections of Indy that lost power, but no calls for phone service. I expected today to be brutal, but I guess the Lord spared me!

Morning, everyone.

Bob, the PRR was notorious for put on number boards in all sorts of non-standard fashions. The ones I remember actually seeing in service are like the ones on the 9798, skinny side in, fat side out. But, the PRR number boards were never the standard F-7 number boards. The skinny side wasn't much different than the fat side. They actually had a curve that followed the sheet metal curve in cowl the looked almost flat, not like the obvious skinny/fat look of an Athearn F-7. That last picture Ken posted is actually an F-3 that was rebuilt with F-7 internals and side panels but they left the F-3 number boards. So I'd pick out a picture and mount them the way it's shown for the unit number you want to use. The Pennsy still considered itself the "Standard Railway of the World" at the time and, from those train phone antennas down, never did things the same way as the rest of the lower class railroads. :) I was looking at the radar last night and it looked like Indiana was getting hammered. I'm surprised you weren't swamped with calls too, Phillip. I didn't hear of any more tornado's but the squall lines sure looked like they had the potential. Looks like you had one of those nights I had a few days ago. Finally got in bed about 0500 - just wasn't sleepy for some reason.

Chris, I have a little less than an acre of which about .6 acres is lawn. My lawn service charges $35 a week to mow, edge, and clean all the leaves and debris from the flower beds. I don't know how that compares to your cost structure but I've had him the whole three years I've lived here and he's reliable and does good work. Even with the economic problems, I'd find a way to keep his service. I figured it would take me about three years before I was even if I was to buy all the equipment I need to do my own yard and that doesn't count the hospital bills from flipping over the tractor since about half my land is on the side of hill. :) I pay a year in advance so he gives me a deal. I was talking to him Monday and he'd like to raise his rates to new customers but there's just too much cost resistance right now. Assuming this economy ever improves, he will join the inflation bandwagon quick.

I like your list of the five biggest businesses and I think you're probably close to right. Here, the biggest business are those places that give payday loans, followed by pawn shops and gas stations. We have a gas station on almost every corner of every street. I have no idea how they all stay in business. The only businesses we have that stay open 24 hours are Walgreens, Walmart, and the bail bond agency. I don't know if there's symbiotic relationship there or what. :D

Ken, Delaware will feel the effects of Bill but mostly long period swells of 7 to 10 feet. Those are the fun kind of waves that surfers like and shouldn't be a problem close to shore. This weekend would be a good time to stay on the beach further north though. It looks like Cape Cod will take the brunt of the short period, high frequency waves, which could reach 18 to 22 feet. Only totally crazy surfers will try those. At least you have no excuse not to get some layout work done this weekend. Dianna is going to Women of Faith extravaganza in Atlanta next weekend and both girls will be gone too. Just me and the cats. I'll set out a big mound of food for them and disappear for the weekend into the basement. I'm looking forward to it.

Jeffrey, take Bob's advice about how to roll out your backdrop. I did mine the "logical" way and I'm still using up rubber cement keeping down the pop-ups.

Corey, the first thing I do with Athearn heavyweights is replace the trucks with the Athearn metal wheel variety. I've tried using other wheels with the standard trucks and they never seem to work as well either. Seems like they should, since it works with my AHM heavyweights bit not the Athearns. The 36" wheels should be fine with thing like newer tank cars and covered hoppers. The only problems I've had with 36" wheels is when they were so big that they'd rub against the body. That's one way to know the real car had 33" wheels. ;) Sounds like a nice family trip and the Hiawatha trip sounds really cool. We're going on a cruise starting on November 1st (praying that hurricane season is over) but I'd much rather ride the Hi. I don't think I can convince the girls that would be more fun than eight days in the Caribbean though.

It's already 89 with a dewpoint of 74 here so I guess you could call it a little muggy. We've got thunderstorms popping up all over the radar so we really should get some rain today. That same cold front that went through the Midwest is pushing south now and I'm actually a little worried this could get more severe than the NWS thinks. There's already a real good squall line in Mississippi. If these storms can get organized here, we could get some tornadic activity. We'll see what happens but I hope it at least rains.

Jim is that contract? also $35 a week for 52 weeks or $35 everytime he shows up? also how many time a year does he mow? Down here about 26 to 33 mowings a year are needed for a feed and watered lawn and about 10 to 15 mowings a year for a unfeed un watered lawn.

For florida rate's he about dead on......Most contract mowers charge about $50 a month x 12=$600 a year for .25 acre yard Regardless how many times they mow in a year. Uncontract any where from $10 t0 $40 dollars for the same size yard depending on the operator! I don't do contract due to most of them are rip offs and only favor the operator and not the consumer.....JMO. For On-Call Mowings I charge per .25- $25 That covers grass as tall as but no taller than the rear tires of my mower...For scheduled Mowings $15 for mowings which involves mow, weed eat, edge, and blow off concrete. and add $3-$10 if the customer wants me to shoot the weeds in the flowerbeds and fence lines with round up! On a average most of my .25 customers Pay any where from $390 to $495 per year depends on how many time a year they need me to mow! Now this weekend I got a pressure wash job too! $75 dollars for a large single wide trailer covered in green algae!LOL's I cleaned off the roof of it last week end it had 6" of leaf litter and there were weeds growing on the roof! No crap I could have mowed the roof! I wish I would have taken a before and after picture of it! Well I got go and cook dinner for the wife.... Baked Fish, baked potato and vegie tonight!

We've been having one thunderstorm after another today. Soon as one moves out another moves in. Looks like we're finally getting a break though.

Been working on the backdrop today. I've got the background scenes up and now I'm cutting out some items (pics of structures, etc) to place in the foreground. Last night I had put the background sections together (2 sections per box) so I would have to line up only 3 sections on the layout instead of 6. Well, one got put together different from the other two. Guess which one got put up first today. That's right, the different one. By the time I noticed the wrong one was up it was too late. The glue had set and I wouldn't be able to get it off without destroying it. So I decided to leave it there. There's a very abrupt scenery change where it joins the next one. I can add in some elements later to soften the join line and make it less noticeable but right now it stands out like a sore thumb. I'll just have to avoid taking photos of that particular area for the time being. That's what I get for not paying strict attention when Murphy is watching. Pics later.
