Just watched the second episode of a new TV program called Combat Trains. I'm watching it on the Smithsonian Channel at 9 pm (est) on Monday nights. Pretty good so far. Last week's hour long episode was on the Burma Railway. I like military history and I like trains. Go figure. This week's episode was on hospital trains during the Crimea War, the American Civil War, and WWI. I'm not sure but I think next week is on mounting weapon systems on trains.

South Vietnam had military trains also, during that war. National Geographic ran a magazine article on them in the 60's or 70's, and how dangerous they were, particularly to the crews, not to mention the soldiers. During WWII, the Pullman Company created 'Troop Sleepers,' and 'Troop Kitchens,' to transport troops within the US, and maybe Canada. They were more or less upgraded boxcars with bunks or tables/kitchens.

It's been an interesting program. They were saying how the cars were being converted to carry and treat the wounded and how new cars were particularly made as hospital cars and that at the end of WWI were converted to civilian cars. Didn't know about the South Vietnam train, I'll have to check it out.

You know, Model Power for years made a bunch of cars with military equipment loads, and even a 16" HO scale rail gun, if you wanted to have an 'Army Train' for your railroad. They also made Navy and I believe an AF versions too, but were harder to find. Matchbox used to make an M1 Abrams tank, that was slightly smaller than HO scale, but good for flatcar loads. I called these the M1M variant(intended to be air droppable, and 'manned' by a crew of 'little people.'). The Matchbox M1 came in dessert cammo.

It's a great show, I agree and on my favorite channel, but I have yet to catch an entire episode. I wish they would put it on demand.

I'm hoping to see a program featuring the role of the B&O during the civil war.
