Good Morning from a windy chilly Madison, WI.

Smells good, but all I have time for is coffee please, black. Need the jolt.
Posted some new pics in the forum of Greenbrier Presidential Express O scale train I'm doing. Details in the thread.

Cheers,

Johnny

Good morning. It's 37 and partly cloudy. The high will be 70 and it will be sunny.

I have plenty to keep me busy today. I'll be adding an ounce of weight to my Tyco 'Dutch Cleanser' hopper, a bit over two ounces to the 'Frontier Chemicals' tank car and I have yet to weigh a couple other tank cars. A gondola with truck mounted couplers will be getting body mounted couplers. Several cars need weathering including an old Varney PRR 40' boxcar. Nothing else on my RR is clean so why should it be an exception.

I'm glad to see other people are keeping themselves busy. Me, not so much. Living out of a hotel for the past 5 weeks with minimum entertainment and not working since Monday afternoon.....I'm a bit on the board side.

I did go look at an abandon roundhouse in Manly, IA the other day. Then I looked up some information after I got back. That was neat to see. I think they use it as a fertilizer storage house now, it was empty when I peaked my head in there.

Now to figure out what I can do today.

I try to keep busy to keep from going stir crazy. Most of time of being home bound is boredom. That's where having a good hobby comes in handy. Even being on the low income side as mine is I still manage to get some things done.

When my wife and I we're driving to Des Moines we passed a sign that said, " Manly Forest City". Now, I know it was for Manly, and Forest City, but it read kind of funny to me. I asked what kind of forest was manly and my wife replied, " no fairies in that forest I guess"!:D Every once in awhile she's quick witted. That's my Girl!:D

Say Corey,

Your wife's quick witted answer; LAMO

My wife is quick witted, also.
I am forever gtateful she does not make comments after some of my unthinking statements!:o

It is so difficult to walk with your foot in your mouth.

Evening gang!
Saw something today that warmed even my old crusty heart. Stopped in a local Jiffy Mart to get a beverage. This store also has a Subway sandwich shop. A young Marine in full dress uniform and an older man who appeared to be a farmer were chatting at the Subway counter. They continued chatting over to the cashier as I took my place in line behind them. As the Young Marine was being rung up, the farmer reached ahead of him and told the cashier that he was paying for the soldiers lunch. When the Marine objected he told the young man that he had already done enough for us, and that the least he could do was to buy his lunch. They shook hands and the Marine headed for the door after thanking the man.
The cashier and I were both just speachless for a moment as we watch the farmer leave.:)
Realizing what just happened, I am going to keep an eye out for these young men and women when I make my lunchtime treks. The farmer was dead on right. For what our servicemen and women do, the least we can do is buy one lunch when we can.:D

We now return you to your regular programming, trains!

Hi Karl,
Yes that was a great gesture for sure!!

Now about the shot of the Varney Dockside, to the best of my knowledge they brought out the model but not sure if it had the Walschaert valve gear on it as originally brought out?

Even though it was beyond the Era I'm modeling I'm intreauged by the little tank Loco as many years back a neighbor gave me one of old Varney's Loco's. I'm not sure what happened to all the drive gear for it though?

I bought one of the newer ones by Life Like but it doesn't have the guides for the Crossheads to ride on or any prevision to attach a Yoke to support the guides! Not very Lifelike to me.

Was this an early model that had all the Valve Gear, Guides & Yoke or do you know who either makes a conversion kit or a more accurate loco?

Thanks for any help you or others might be able to supply!

The reason it doesnt look like a Varney is cuz it's not! It's an old Sakura Japanese import, from somewhere back in the 60's (groovy!) AFAIK, the valve linkage is original. The open frame motor has been replaced, now had a can and a NWSL gearbox. The cast decals were all shaved off by the prev. owner and some were replaced by him with castings. The rest I installed before paint, DCC, and sound were added!
Little thing runs well, and pulls well too, as it weighs over a pound!:D
If its a docksider with valve gear you seek, might I suggest finding, then remotoring an old Riverossi...........might be easier to find than a Sakura.

Edit: just found a Rivarossi on fleabay.....pics not the best, but you get the idea. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rivarossi-H...536216?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item415e7405d8

Good Evening to all ~ actually at this point it's Good Morning!

As stated before, I felt I got too heavy handed using the darker Grey marking pen to simulate tire and oil marks on the grade crossings so I used some Artists Oderless Thinner on a paper towel to dilute and soak-up the excess dark Grey and it looks a lot more realistic to me. I also used some rust on the spike heads to kill the dark blueish black which I think also looks more natural on the edges and possibly I should put a touch of silver on some of the center ones to simulate tire polish.

What do you guys think?

Thanks Karl, I didn't think of looking under Rivarosi.

Morning all from Ye Olde London Towne. Another cool one here, clear but a chilly 7c (44f) to start, with highs of only 13c (55f) (Why can't you 'mericans get with the other 96% of the world's population and use Celsius? :p)

I've spent the last week hibernating in the train shed working on modules for our club's layout. Slow going but at last they are starting to look like something other than lumps of wood and styrofoam.

Kyle: Way back when, I was stuck living out of hotels a friend suggested taking a mini modelling workshop with me. Just a few tools & paint, with a couple of small kits. The whole thing fitted into a couple of old Tupperware containers.

Corey: LMAO. Must have been full of lumberjacks.

David: looks good as it is. I'd leave the spikes rusty. Most people would drive to try and avoid anything sticking up, so tire polishing of the heads would be minimal I'd think.

Have a great weekend all and take care.

Good morning. It's 44° and sunny. The high will be 79° and it will remain sunny.

I had to turn the heater on for a short time to take the chill off. Somebody has done knocked that barbed wire fence between here and the north pole down. Today I'll be checking some of the newer cars I haven't weighed yet. Who knows how light they may be. Other than that I don't see much happening here today.

Hey Guys,

First post from me in awhile. It certainly was slow here for awhile wasn't it?

Anyways, since I'm stuck on a mobile device for awhile until I can get a new laptop I haven't been posting much. Tonight im on an iPad though, so it's a little easier to type on this rather than my iPod.

Anyways, in sports news, my team made the playoffs, and the first game of the post season is tomorrow. We actually faced this team earlier in the season and beat them. This time we will also have all of our starters, so the game is in our favor statistically, but there are never any garuntees, especially in the playoffs.

In weather news, it's certainly fall, or at least october. It's cold and windy. This morning they also mentioned the s word, aka, snow to those of you in the south. It has certainly been an awful season for the leaves. Between the wind and the rain, the leaves are just dropping off the trees. Which leads me to another question, do the trees change colors in the south?

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend.

Down here they turn late. Right now all the trees are still green here. About late November to mid December the leaves will turn and drop. The pines and other evergreens will stay green all year.
