Hello:D:D

Got a nice windchill going tonight. We're at -11C and the windchill is about -24C---considering a 60kmh windgust with steady 45kmh winds:eek: Several roads are still closed north of us and a friend of ours called up and told us they are shoveling out about 30" of snow from their 3/4 mile driveway----using a Paymaster front end loader....

I have to find some more trestle pieces again---it seems that the trainroom gnomes have been at it again...:rolleyes:

Hello to all - Rex, Ken, Jeffery, Jim & Josh & others,

Well I had somewhat of a false start a while back that was short lived. Major computer problems knocked me out till today. Had to build a new one and then was still faced with major Virus problems but I think I've got most of them cured?? God I hope so!

On top of all of this the convalescent hospital that is taking care of my Mom somehow droped her and broke her arm near or at her Left shoulder so she had to be hospitalized for surgery and that too took about four days of time and traveling back and forth to Fresno, a 31 mile run each way but I'm use to it and my Turbo Eclipse is a lot of fun to drive.

As far as the weather here this past Monday 12-07-09 it Snowed here and put down about one inch and then the weather got pretty darn cold with a lot of moisture to it and the temperature droped down to 28* or lower, very chilly. When the Yousemite Mountain ranges and the Serrias, which are closer, to the North by about 10 miles get snow on them and the cold settles down my way along with the already frozen snow on the ground and roof it make for some very cold days and nights. It did warm up a bit today for awhile and it's about 36* outside, I just went out there and in the light from the flash light I could see fine white flakes starting to fall so I may be in for more Snow?? At this time of year it most always Snows when it's between 34 to 36*.

The good news is that during all of this I managed to take a break from all the frustration and work on my layout a bit more by connecting the lower rail line with the upper and then finally running the main power lines around the outside edge of the layout so that I can make connection of track feeders and block selectors which I have already begun to do. It's not the ultimate of where I want it to be? but will surfice for now and allow trains to run as intended with easy access to strip the main wires and solder the feeders to it and the track. Some adjustments had to be done to the track work in a couple of spots but that keeps me in Gandy Dancing practice, I can't just ride the Rods all the time!

This now is beginning to feel a lot more like railroading and gets me very anxious to extend the line as planned. Being able to run the trains and test the track is a lot of fun
even if I am still using just straight DC. The raido control hand throttle from Aristocraft is quite enjoyable to use and gives me a lot of freedom to move along with the train and ensure there are no derailments. I already noticed one thing, and I haven't got all the track feeders connected either, which is that that the locomotives slow down a lot more prototypically than before.

Rex, your bench work looks pretty nice and similiar to what I'm doing except I havent yet put any kind of facier boards on my tables yet but then I have five or six more to build too.

Glad you and Jim avoided any Tornados, they can sure cause the damage.

Well now, I think I'll be able to be a more frequent visitor to Flow's place with the new computer, it's good to see you all again.

Speaking of that, whatever happened to the fellow who used to post the pictures of Flow and another gal along with the breakfast menue? I kinda liked the Brunette, is she still there with Flo?

Drive the spikes straight and keep the rail aligned and for God Sake, No Peeing on the rails, it causes soft spots.

Morning all.

David, welcome back!

It's the coldest it's been all year here in the Mid'lantic, 21*F. Nowhere near as cold as it is for Barry, Corey and other friends in the North, but a major shock for my area. Even my thermals can't keep me warm in this stuff!

Didn't get any work done in the trainroom yesterday. My 20yr-old daughter was supposed to be flying in from Austria where she just finished a semester of college, but she didn't come directly back to Maryland - she went to the town in Ohio where her college is located, so she could gather up some of her stuff and say hello to friends there. I was hoping she'd call to let us know she got back to the U.S. ok, but she never did. When I went on the web to get information about her flight, all I could find were places that wanted to sell me planes tickets! I'm supposed to drive up there on Saturday to pick her up. Hope she calls today, otherwise I won't have a clue where to find her...

Good morning folks

It was a brisk 21 F as I stepped out this morning. Our high will be 33 F.

Last night was an easy night. I had to take my daughter to her volleyball practice. While she was there I was able to get some Christmas shopping in.

My son has decided to try to paint some people since I have 100 unpainted people of the workbench. So far he has done about 5. He did a pretty good job.

Saturday my son and I will be going to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He will be working on his Mammal Study merit badge. Sometime over the weekend we will do the bi-weekly restocking of the cupboards.

My son wants to put the HO trains under the train. I told he needs to ask the new cat what she thinks. If not the HO the Lionel O scale will go under there.

Welcome bback David!

I hope everybody has a good day.

Good morning folks.

It's a balmy ONE degree outside! Dang, add some wind, and you have yourself a regular January day. I guess we're just making up for the warmest November on record.

It sounds like everyone is doing fairly well. I've got to keep it short this morning so have a great day everyone.

Good morning. It's 40 and cloudy. The high will be near 50 with rain.

I've been looking at the houses I got yesterday and noticing the shortcuts manufacturers used back then to get a good looking house into a given space. The doors are all HO Scale height but are narrow and the structure is pushed together from side to side as if it were in a vise. When set into an area with like sized structures this made the area seem a little larger. After all, who cared overall how the houses looked, the emphasis was on the trains. I took photos of some of the houses yesterday with an auto set in front. They look like modern offerings with a 1/64 matchbox car in front. The car is however 1/87 scale. I have a couple of old scale size cars from the early 70's and they're made to the same smallish size as the houses, which seem to be caught between HO and TT size. I have other HO structures that are like this and they were bought many years ago. It seems that our houses have gotten larger over the years as modelers demanded more accuracy in scale of not only the trains but the autos and structures as well.

Good Morning--

Greetings David

We got up this morning to a -13C reading with windchill at -24C!!! The winds are still going at 40-70kmh and blowing the little bit of snow around---meanwhile up near Bala ON--near Parry Sound ON-- they are looking at yet another 100cm today due to snowsqualls:eek:---that is on top of the 100cm they got from yesterday:eek: The MTO is telling people who are trying to go to cottage country to forget about it--they're all closed up there--

I've got a lot of stuff to do over the next few days---we got a call from family we have not seen in a LOOONNG time. So we are going to get stuff done up for Xmas a little more---as well as prepare places for them when they do show up:eek::):)

Jeff New housing starts are a good thing--;):)

Ken I've always wondered about that--when these people show up I HOPE they're a little more findable---:cool:

Have a good one people!!

Bob's around here some where making table candles!

Well it's afternoon here so Good afternoon folks. Temp here in Central NS 32F or 0C. For the longest time the temperatures being posted on this thread for the lower 48 states has been blowing my mind. I've been reading Jeffery's posts and seeing the temps posted for Louisiana are close to what we have here at latitude 45 deg North. Sandy has been posting about snow storms and unless you live in Florida or Southern Calif. everyone is freezing. Now I look outside the grass is green (wont be for long though) a little covering of snow here or there. Guess it must be Global warming. A map I found on Google seems to explain the temperatures without reasoning. We seem to be in the same temperate climate as Greenville SC and other points further South.

Crazy world eh!
Y'all have a great day, dress warm :D
Cheers from the not so balmy North

A lot of the morning was spent working on my kitchen drain. The coupling that connects the sink drains to the drain pipe had corroded and this morning it busted with a resounding pop. In removing it I found that the trap also was on the verge of giving up the ghost. So I needed to replace the top coupling and the entire trap assembly. Finding the trap assembly was easy. It's 1 1/4" inside diameter and is readily available. The top coupling on the other hand was a horse of a different color. It's 1 1/2" at the top and reduces down to 1 1/4" at the bottom. Guess what I couldn't find anywhere. A 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" reducer! It seems next to nobody makes this piece of hardware anymore. Little wonder being that it came out of a trailer that's almost 60 years old. I ended up having to fashion one from a 1 1/2" connector and a 1 1/4" connector with a short compression sleeve in between. There was one place where I had to glue the pipes together with lots of LockTite glue and clamped them off with hose clamps. They'll not be coming apart any time soon. The assembly has been tested and no leaks were detected.

Jeffery- After seeing some of your modeling and the way you use "found" materials, I expected you to find a homemade solution to your reducer problem. I think finding a creative solution is one of the greatest a modeler can have.
I have used the styrene plastic dishes from TV dinners to scratch build several structures. I like to recycle materials where I can, many times just to see what kind of results I can acheive.
My father came up during the 1930's depression. He saved nuts, bolts, screws and nails from many sources. He rarely had to go to a store to buy a nut or bolt when the lawn mower vibrated parts loose.
So, Jeffery, I enjoy hearing of someone like you creating a solution instead of giving up when a part is not available.

Hope everyone has a well trained weekend.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome back, feels good to get in with the group again and back to Railroading and working on the layout again.

It seems some of the former members aren't at the coffee shop anymore? Hope everyone is doing Ok but with these times it questionable.

It just rained last night, it measured out to be 1.8" so it was a bit more than expected but we need it. The temp outside is 50* under cloudy skys.

Today my doctor increased my antibiotics, again. I was taking 2000 ml of Vancomycin by iv every day (1000 ml every 12 hrs). Now I have to take 3000 ml by iv every day (1500 ml every 12 hrs). I'm gonna be on the bottle for a total of 4 hrs every day. Geez doc! Make up your mind!

Hello, folks. I had a very bad week for electronics. My hard drive, wireless router, and three sound decoders all took a collective crap on me over the course of the week.
Sigh...
It could be worse. It could be raining. Oh, wait. It is raining.

Evening yall.

Well, I finally located my firstborn daughter today. Or rather, my wife did: She found Sarah's boyfriend's cell phone# on a slip of paper, called him, and he referred her to the friend she is staying with. She apparently told my 14yr-old daughter Catherine where she would be at on a Facebook 'wall' Wednesday evening, but Cat never mentioned anything about that. Ahhh, communication! At least now I'll know where to pick her up from. Anyways I'm relieved that she's safely back in the States! She's the same one who has a tendency to lose money and important documents on a regular basis, and I had nightmare visions of her getting stranded overseas without her passport or plane ticket.

Jeff - I was wondering, if you bought stock in the company that makes vancomycin, would that be considered "insider trading"? Your sure giving them a steady revenue stream!

Haven't accomplished much of anything in the trainroom the past few days. Wednesday I was operating on the Club's seasonal layout at the VFD; Thursday I was trying to track down Sarah; and this evening I was doing Dads Taxi Service for my youngest daughter. Maybe next week..?
