Josh Yes, what an experience they are, i'v had a few of late and i still worry about that thing flying round your head, hope it works out for you.

Good evening crew,

Didn't get much MRRing done this past weekend for want of a set of rail-nippers that I could've sworn I had before I left on my last vacation. It was 8:00pm Saturday when I couldn't find them anywhere - LHS closed at 6:00. The new turnouts are sitting there ready to be installed though!

G/M and Steve, you guys have aroused my curiosity about the unit coal train operation - I'll have to GoogleEarth those coordinates when I get home!

Ken, check your PM too. ;)

Hi gang and thanks Steve for the OJ. I needed that to get through all my Tortoise. Ray, hope you have made good progress. Well, I am now starting to get the fever...football fever (REAL FOOTBALL, Steve :p ) that is. Yeah, it's that time again and my Bama boys open up this weekend with Hawaii here in T-town. Nothing like 92,000+ fans in a town of about the same. That 92K actually will be more like 110,000 because so many will come in for all the parties and special events and not actually go to the game.

KenL: Jeeze man, I'm sorry! I found your rail nippers in my tool kit. I must of picked them by up mistake:rolleyes: when I was over there last.

Hey GM: Got a couple of questions for you: Did you buy your hidden track panel LED's at Radio Shack? What type are they? What size resistors did you use? What supply voltage are you using?
I want to make a panel display for the track that is on the outer wall and forgot where you posted all this stuff.
Found the area by your coordinates on the Google thingy. That is a nice piece of software. Why does the name 'Flattop mine' ring so many bells in my head?

Josh: Hope the results are what you want, but at the same time you need to get it fixed, if it is possible. I know that an extra monthly check is good gravy, but you sure don't want added aches and pains when you get older.

Hey Rex. I used the Miniatronics 1.5 mm LEDs. They came with appropriate resistors to run on a 12v power source (470 ohm, I think), which is what I used. If I were doing it over, I'd go with the 3mm LED. You'll spend a little more than buying locally, but Miniatronics makes it easy...

As for Flat Top, it was a large producer. Also, the controversy over forced labor there with the James Knox incident and being a Sloss mine makes it well known. The area was later strip mined.

Rex, I have assembled about 7 of the Tortiose assemblies and have installed 3 in the last couple of days. You are right, the real pain is having to be under the layout and above the layout at the same time. I take a couple small pieces of heavy cardstock and hold the switch pionts half way open. Then install the machine under the layout making sure everything is lined up right. Tighten one of the screws from the assembly into the sub roadbed. Wire up the DC part and check it out. It is usually within specs the first time. When I am sure, I tighten the other screws into the plywood subroadbed and call it done. I would have gotten more done but I had two CD orders from clients that I had to get out over the weekend. One involved finishing the Artwork and Layout for the cover, etc. as well as creating all the CDs. The client has been patiently waiting for them since last June when I recorded her Son and Daughter who play in a local String Quartet (Her daughter is a Sophmore this Year at Eastman - Viola Major. Her son is one of two fantastic cellists in the family). This was a definate WHOA!!! performance. Awesome, just awesome! But both of us have been out of town at different times this summer.

BTW, Steve, thanks for the glass of OJ, I needed a break.

My decals for the Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western arrived via UPS this morning (the bill came last week.....). So now I have too get to work decaling all those "undecorated" locos and cars I have laying around the layout. Hmm, I wonder which one I should screw up first?????

I've just done that, i thought our 30 car coal trains were long. There's a couple of trains sitting by Bentley Lake north of that power station, man those are longgggggg. Must be awesome watching them thunder by I've got no idea over here. That's an impressive looking new highway too!! If our Government was building it it would be single lane with no flyovers and probably dirt.

Beautiful sunny spring afternoon over here and I'm still sitting round with a sinus infection and the flu. Should go back to work tomorrow but I'll see at around 6.30am in the morning, push the snooze button and roll over or jump in the shower!!

The only real football Rex is this http://www.allblacks.com/ they have one everything they've played and will be the next world cup winners.

Ken.

I outta beat you all, this is REAL football here:

hehe (*gives a devilish look*)...

As for the MRI, if it shows damage, I get it fixed, and the VA compensates me because the military screwed up. If it does not show anything, the VA compensates me for pain & numbness they cannot explain, what a deal hey?

Got x-rays of my back too, back in July. I should know in about a month or so what the VA thinks.

By the way, all $843 worth of Sony Digital camera are here, :D nwo to start playing around with it.

Good morning Bill!

Actually I spent the nite here in the CS, Daughter #1 jumped onto the 'putor while I had my back turned, said she had to take an online quiz for school (yeah, uh-huh) . So the little green light beside my name was a mistake.

I did manage to do that virtual flyover of the Alabama power plant at least, and I saw the same train that NZKen saw! [BTW Thanx again Eric for the PM pix.] I sure wish hi-rez views were available for every square mile of land on the planet, because then I could follow a main line in its entirety between two major cities from above, and see who-knows-how many trains on it...

Rex You may keep the nips, I don't think it's practical for me to fly down to retrieve them;) If I had really wanted to work on that track, I couldv'e cut it with a Dremel disc - but no deadlines, so no rush LOL!

Josh That's a pretty extreme way to get the money for a new camera, ya think?:p Hope that condition of yours is resolved quickly...

Morning Everyone. With everyone talking football,I know now that fall can't be to far off. Rex,I truly hope Bama has a much better season than last year. I also hope we shut up that upstart cow college.(you know, auburn);) . Eric, I dig the photos there boss, really great stuff. Also folks, within the next few weeks, maybe a month,I will have to offline to move my furniture over to my new place of residence. I don't know about you guys, but I hate moving. I hope this is the last time I'll move.Yeah,right. Anyway,y'all have a good day,and I'll be in touch.:) .William.

Hi Ken. The BNSF coal trains at the Miller Steam Plant are pretty awesome. They used to run all SD70MAC power, but now we're seeing GEs in the mix. Loaded, they have three units on the front and two in distributed power on the rear. Empty, all power is up front. At one point they were 121 cars, but that was several years ago and there was talk of going to 135. I'm not sure what length is currently running. It's not uncommon to see 4 trains in the yard add at Quinton, with freights passing by on the main. I've been told that on high draw days, it's not unusual to have 4 full trains unload at the plant. As you might guess, Miller is a major power source for the Birmingham metro area.

The highway is known as Corridor X, but when complete, will become Interstate 22. It'll connect Birmingham with Memphis and eliminate traveling the many backroads now required to get to Memphis. BTW, hopefully your Govt isn't spending your great grandchildren's money like ours is, lol.

Mornin' Bill! Mornin' everybody!

Another rainy day in upstate NY. Weather man says we will get an inch of heavy dew today. Guess I will just have to postpone the lawn mowing a couple more days and do some "yard" work down cellar......:D

Grande man, I downloaded Google Earth for Mac OSX last night. As soon as I figure out how to use co-ordinates on it, I will check out that property.

Thanks for the coffee! Later!

Hi Ray. Just paste 33° 40.19'N, 86° 57.29'W into the address field and click the GE button to the right.. Google Earth is a great research tool! It, combined with a GPS is awesome. I like to enter my GPS waypoints into GE for a visual on where I've been. Unfortunately, many remote areas have yet to have high high res satellite photos taken. I'm sure that will improve with time.

It's fun to play with GE around your chosen prototype. Going to track level in 3D and having a look around is cool stuff!

I've givenm up on Google Earth, I just stick to using Windows Live or Google Maps (both online), I figured, "why download something that has to be online, when you can get the same online?" Especialy since Windows live had aircraft "birds eye" views... http://local.live.com

Good Morning USA> Hey rhoward that rain just passed through Good Old Buffalo and I guess I'll have to cut my grass or maybe send out the son and supervise OLDGETTSYK

Hello everyoneWilliam hope the move goes to plan sir.
Ken M hope you get well soon,,, just think springs on it's way
Ken Ldid you get some new rail cutters
Rex i didn't know you played English football over there, thats great
GM Wow, i'd love to see one of those coal trains roll by, we only get them around 20-35 cars long but just one EMD class 66 on the point, they have to work very hard with around 100 ton's per car, the older MGR cars only held aroung 35 tons
Howdy Ray

First day back at work today and what a bad day it was, the company decided to do a full warehouse count of every part we stock, which is around 89'000 lines, to say it was dusty would be the understatement of the centuary, thank goodness for respirators, i got some stick though, most popular was darth vador impressions followed by hanibal lectar impressions, oh well it keapt everyone amused

Where lawn work is concerned, I never do today what can be put off until tomorrow...:D

grande man, I finally got to take a look at the area on Google Earth, that ought to keep you exploring for a good long time. I checked out my own house using the program and found that the lawn needs to be mowed.

Got 3 more tortioses installed and working on the layout so far today. Hope to get a couple more in and wired tonight.
