Mornin' Bill! Mornin' Josh! Mornin' Steve! Mornin' Ray!

Josh, your layout plan looks like you will have a good time building and playing.

Steve, thank you. I dread having to set it up again with their new site, but I guess I should get started soon. If I understand it correctly, I think you have to move them one photo at a time. That sucks! I would setup on this photo album if it weren't for losing all the previous posted links. (Still might)

Howdy, howdy, howdy, again. I have, for the first time in months, actually got some trains running. I have been checking out the track in the semi-hidden staging area after installing a bunch of Torti. Have about 20 or so more to buy and install before the Golden Spike Ceremony. Had trouble with one turnout and my 8 coupled locos derailing. Found that the track was slightly twisted where it came into the turnout (Walther's 7 1/2 curved) and caused the locos to pick the safety rail at the frog. I raised the outside of the turnout about 1/32" and it seems to have corrected the problem. I am now adding the plywood base for the area above part of the staging. I will post photos this weekend.

I also got to run a new Bachmann decapod that I picked up a couple months ago from Micro-mark. It was running very jerky at first. So... I did a little checking and found one of the trucks in the tender had a loose screw. Tightened that and cleaned the contacts, and she runs well. I think this must be an older version of the decapod as they advertise "all wheel pickup" on the tender (which means "no wheel pickup" on the engine) and this one picks up on only two wheels per truck. Not the greatest and will be modified at some time. Oh well, the price was right! She will pull about 10 cars up a 1 1/2 percent incline. I will most likely add some extra weight to increase that some.

Steve Yeah, those Conrail slugs are looking pretty neat, wish the poster would wander on over to the Forum!
Ray & Rex Yesum... I think I'm having more fun designing it, so that the track plan allows me to fit the stuff I want into it! Once I get it to where I like it, and buy a house  then I can figure out exactly how much space I have & what I can fit. Like I've said many times before, I HOPE to build an add-on to the house, or a "shop" in the backyard to fit the layout.

Anyways, here's the NEW plan:

Well what do you know guy's, i finally got to mow the lawn after what seem's ages, it was around 4" to 6" deep in places, it would have been worse if it wern't for the rabbit. After that i had to go to the dentist for a filling in a back tooth, i think paying the bill was more painfull.

I also won a nice steam loco on ebay, it's a Hornby B12 class 4-6-0 in apple green decorated for the London north eastern railway as has a smoke unit fitted, just what the doctor ordered.

Anyone hear from Carey or is he still going through that monster training manual for work

Greetings,

Not much going on here trainwise, at least until I can drive downtown and pickup a half-dozen new #6 turnouts for that yard throat reconstruction.

Josh I hope the day comes soon when you get the space to build that Cajon-based empire. Is that something you will need more than one person to operate?

Ray it looks like you get to run a few trains again, glad to hear that!

Well Steve now that the meds are working it looks like you've run out of excuses and Nikki's putting you back to work <LOL>! OTOH, I've had some of my best modeling inspirations while walking behind [or later, riding] a lawn mower...a highly meditative activity, mowing!:D

Steve Yeah, thats my major problem too, I don't have the space yet.

Ken, are you hinting at something there? :P Yes, I'm figuring I can get about 5 or 6 operators on it, for a "session" but otherwise, I'll run on days off, just moving trains up & down the hill, or running a local.

Carey is in Texas, training this week, but suppose to be home tomorrow evening. Then he heads out Sunday for a week to somewhere near Chicago for his first teaching assignment. The man is racking-up on frequent flyer miles:D .

Morning all, hey Flo, has the Thai food arrived yet, your gonna need some soon.

Rex just been looking at homes in bama, it's amazing what i could buy with what i'd make on my house, and i'd be debt free with a huge chunk of $$$. The big problem's talking nicky into it, she's firmly rooted to the spot when it comes to emigration, we talked about NZ where all her friends seem to be going, another's going to australia in 5 weeks for good but she still won't have a bar of it, oh well, it looks like a life of debt.

JoshCaboose hobbys have GP60m's starting at $84 so yes you had better bag those four soon

talking of spending were off to the hobby shop with our Robert, he's 7 today

:D Happy 7th Birthday Robert:D

Oh, get him something good!

As for the GP60's I think they're semi-new, they're from an estate sale (claims the seller) and they're "never run" not that he would know but yeah, I may just have to grab them.

Here's an interesting site I've run accross too:

Morning Bill... So I've decided to skip the two GO60M & 2 GP60B auction, I'm gonna wait for my loads of actions to close, and try to track down the Athearn SE BNSF GP50/GP60 patch set. BUT I did manage to rake in another "project", I've bought 2 powered GP9's and 2 more GP9 shells, to make the Cargill unit, and well, its way to many, so one of the two full units will now become BNSF GP9B #1700 or #1701.

Good Weekend to everyone and Happy Birthday Robert!
I hope everyone can get in some rail time. I have spent the last few days trying to get some of the 'put-off' MR projects whittled down: installed 7 Tortoise machines, put tools in proper places (yeah, right!), repaired seveal pieces of rolling stock, and installed new JMRI Decoder Pro software on the upgraded computer.

I have to download all the CV decoder settings for each loco into the JMRI for the files, which takes a few minutes each. Man, their new version is great and even include the new Tsunami's. If you don't use this free software, you are really missing out on easy decoder programming. The big plus is all your decoder settings are on file, adjustable settings by typing new value, displayed on specialized pages (motor, speed, sound, functions) or one CV list, and if you ever have to default one, it is easy to put back to your settings by simply downloading the file back into the decoder. All you need with it is a computer interface for about $40.

Steve: Yes, cost of housing in Alabama is still relatively low when compared to some areas of the country, but the average income is also lower. I have been told that a house like mine would cost 2-3 times as much in the Denver area or places in California. I'm sure that would also apply to areas of the Northeast. Also, our property taxes are much lower. Heck, if I were to emigrate, I would head to NZ. That has to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world with very nice weather. I got an idea! Why don't you and your family and me with mine just move in with Ken? He looks like he has the space:eek::D But if you want to come to Alabama, we will first start teaching you the game of REAL football.:D :D

Quake coming, experts warn: Doom for Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane?

24.08.2006
By KELLY MAKIHA
Rotorua, Taupo and Whakatane are set to be wiped out in a massive overdue earthquake, say geologists.

The shocking prediction has been made at a Natural Hazards Management Conference in Christchurch.

Geology experts Tim Davies and Mauri McSaveney have predicted that an alpine fault earthquake is overdue, and would result in the East Cape ripping away from New Zealand, destroying the plateau that Rotorua is based on and taking Taupo and Whakatane with it.

The pair say the earthquake will strike "out of the blue" and cause widespread death, shut down power generators, create tsunamis within New Zealand and overwhelm emergency services.
"The most likely time [for the quake] is now. The next most likely time for it to happen is tomorrow," Associate Professor Davies, of Canterbury University, told the conference.

"It will occur with no recognisable warning. We can't manage it - we have to adapt to it."

The pair have outlined a nightmarish scenario in the aftermath of the quake and are urging people to be prepared as best they can. Overseas help would be needed when the quake struck.

"Shaking damage and land instability will disrupt surface transport for months, tourists will be trapped, and distribution of vital supplies (eg, food, fuel) will be limited. Hydro stations will shut down immediately and may be slow to restart, power reticulation will be damaged. Only satellite phones will remain in use."

"No services will be as normal."

The pair say the Alpine fault quake is a certainty. It is only a matter of when.
