What kind of car is this, and what is it used for. Saw a whole train load of them empty one night and had never seen them before.

Lumber is usually bundled and put on centerbeams, so I kinda doubt that's it exactly, but it's definitely been modified to carry very specifically sized freight. I mean, it COULD be lumber, but to modify that many cars to haul freight that comes bundled and fits nicely on existing equipment doesn't seem likely.
What are the reporting marks on those cars? Maybe do a little research on this. Fascinating stuff
