Next Contest announcement. As we get close to 400,000 views, only 18,000 to go, I thought I would give you all a heads up.

I don't know what kind of contest yet as photo comparisons are sort of out. Or are they? If you have any ideas let me know. This site belongs to you as well as me so any input will be great. Jim:)

Just about finished clearing the top of the bench work. I tried my best to save this bridge, but my patience got the best of me. Garbage can. Jim:o

Dan, Welcome. Slow here these days. Come often and comment as you wish. No, you don't see this scene everyday. More common here on this thread however. If you have questions just ask, I or another person here will help you out. Jim:)

Still trying to take it all in yet. Way much information. But i liked the part where you redid that area next to your desk. Still a lot to read so i will post later as i have ant comments, Dan

That is for sure. I am on i think Page 76. I got a long way to catch up. One thing, when you tore out that area by the desk, Did you already have a idea as to what you were after? Or was it a kinda this just isn't right kinda thing? I know you added a loop but the rest. The pond and things like that. My mind don't work like that. I see something and say that would be nice and then try and put it into my plan. Just wondering. Dan

Dan, First on the refurb issue. One of the things I commonly do is to just sit in the layout room, usually with Evie the Cat on my lap, and just stare at everything. I find stuff all the time that way that needs fixing, refurbing, or whatever. I figured I needed to have a return loop to be true to my 'runner' roots. So I guess the process went like this: By making a loop you have to put something inside the loop. So the lake with the outlet stream with would give me another bridge which all leads to more photo ops. Simply, I planned the whole thing out before anything. Thoughts + a plan = results. I'm not a fan of building from one end of the layout and hopeful it all fits at the other end. I'm not a believer in railroad track planning software either. I do my plans on piece of paper, then build from that. Old fashion maybe, but I don't get lost or bogged down trying to figure out how a track planning software works, or, doesn't work.

Also, I encourage interaction amongst viewers. So don't worry about stepping on my toes.

I'm gone camping for the weekend. Happy Memorial Day to you all. Jim :o

It doesn't have a problem de-railing, but looses contact.....it wants spotless track or won't play so I clean the track and run it some more. After a 5-7 minutes of running & pulling some cars, the light starts flickering and it loses the fire again. It is the only loco that misbehaves in that manner.....thus the lead in the tender plan (where the pickups are located).
The 4-4-0 has a empty area above the front trucks . You need to remove the nose of the boiler and you have a space for more lead. You will have to carve the nose off to allow for the lead. I also converted mine to Dcc. I also flatten out a piece of Lead from my tackle box and laid it on the tender and covered up with wood to keep everything covered up.

Back in town. Got rained on the whole weekend. Didn't really see sun until this morning packing up to come home!

Another reminder. We have a CONTEST in only 15000 views. No one has offered any suggestions???? Help. Jim:)

Let me think about this. Sorry you had a bad weekend. We had the same thing happen the last time time we went tenting up north az. No joy. Glad you made it home ok, Dan

Post 2006, I love that turntable. Jim i am up to 201 so i am catching up. So far it is a beautiful layout. You are no doubt the master!! Dan
:)

Post 2143, I had that picture and don't remember how or where i got it. Beautiful to look at i had that as a wallpaper. Did they show this one on model railroader by chance??

Dan, Do you have the feeling we are the only ones here?

Yes, that photo is one of the top ten I've ever taken for sure. It portrays the loco and the cloudy sort of gloomy weather common in SE Alaska. I like it. You may have seen in on TB or maybe NSO. I think I posted it there as well. Thanks, Jim

PS Here is the photo in full color.

Thanks Sherrel. You bring up something I've long wondered about, namely water barrels. I know I sort of follow my own drummer on most things and I'm not sure a water barrel in the desert in 100 degree temperatures is at all practical. Evaporation is one issue, simply filling these barrels is quite another. This side of the layout is many, many, miles from the nearest water source. Even one of those little maintenance cars or a hand cars could not carry the load. Who could ever get to these barrels to fight any kind of a fire? Murphy's law states that any 'fire' will be exactly between two barrels or be at the farthest point away at best. How many buckets have to be there to fight a raging trestle fire? I hope you get my point. I'm pretty sure that fire barrels became passé around 1880. Certainly there were folks back then that figured out they were as waste of time an effort. This layout portrays 1941 so let it burn baby! Jim

You can take it from me that you Jim is right on about the barrels. I have a shot if i can find it that shows a trestle with no barrels. I have seen several and same. DanView attachment 50193
