Building the Pinnacle Creek Mining & Timber Co. RR

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Very nice!

One small suggestion- Either put grooves for the wheels to follow or install tracks on the shelves. My display cabinet doesn't have either and it drives me a little batty because there's nothing to prevent the cars from cruising off and into the land of the junkpile. And being that you live in the earthquake zone of southern California, they are more likely to do that on you than here.

RR, Our house hasn't had a shake in three years. We should be due. Good point thanks. Also, the small wood sticks supporting the shelves are the last of the wood Sherrel gave me a couple of years ago. Thanks again. Jim :o

Well. This is a difficult post from me. I've thought about this quite a bit lately and have discussed it with my wife. I always said in this thread I wasn't here to "sell" anything. My gift to all those interested would simply be what I know about modeling and photography. Sadly, as of today that all changes. I am putting all my HO rolling stock up for sale. This is not an auction. If you are interested in every item in this photo contact me via PM.

Each loco is DCC. Some have sound. The diesel SW-1 is probably the only HO SW-1 in existence. At least I bought it advertised this way. All of the letters and numbers are dry transfers and are easily removable if you want them removed. I will do it for you if you want. Some of these pieces are fairly rare. Not shown are more log cars and buildings. I will sell it all if anyone wants them. There is even a camera and car on the shelf.

I will give you guys first dibs. Next week I will advertise on other websites I frequent. After that epay. So, if you're interested contact me via PM. Sorry to break my word on selling, but I'm at the point that I have to start getting ready for the ride on the 'West Bound.' Jim:(

To call your items for sale "very nice" would be an understatement.

It is sad to hear about the health issues you are dealing with and I am with all the others in hoping for the very best outcome.

Very, very sorry to hear that you are in this position Jim. If "Provenance" has anything to do with it, your trains should bring in a fortune, if for no other reason than that.

Thanks fellows. Provenance seldom pays the bills I've found. This is a good deal for HO folks or someone who wants to get a big bang for the buck entering HO. Please remember that I'm not gone and don't intend to depart anytime soon. I have On30 to keep me busy. Cheers, Jim:)

I wasn't going to get really concerned unless I saw you selling off your On30 gear Jim. I'm selling stuff off at the moment myself, but it's hard to let go when everything you're selling has been acquired with a definite purpose and not used much. As far as provenance, remember I said "should" not "will" (any movie stars ever come and touch any of it or get photographed with it? How about Photoshop?)

I am new to this forum although not new to the hobby. Don't remember how I stumbled upon the thread, but I'm glad I did. I have just now finished reading the whole thing. Jim, your modeling skills are impressive. I do believe this will be your legacy to model railroading. There are a multitude of wonderful ideas that will certainly help me as well as everyone else. I too, like to build but also like to see the trains go round and round. Don't care much about prototypical operation. Just enjoy running trains.I have just started to work on my layout after a long hiatus. Started with a small (2' x 4') and am in the process of adding a 2' x 8' L extension for a logging camp in HOn30. You have inspired me greatly. Hope all goes well for you health wise in the future. I, too, have some health issues, mostly arthritis, from the past 35 years as an auto tech. Hard to get up and down off of the floor. But we still press on don't we? Sorry for being long winded. I have a lot to catch up on. 'Till next time, Bill:)

Bill, Welcome. Damn, how many days did it take to get through this thread? I'm hoping some retired librarian will come on an make an index. Anyway, participate as much as you want. Please ask questions. This thread has evolved to a point that others besides me will probably give their thoughts. This is all good with me. The spreading of knowledge is the key here.

You mentioned HOn30. Now there is a way to spend money. Do we assume the rest of the layout is HO? Give us a photo, this sounds interesting. Jim:)

Okay, I'm getting some PMs about the HO collection. I've priced it out roughly and all the stuff in this photo prices out in the $900 range. Even the brand new camera is $65. The SW-1, the only DCC one of its kind, has an offer of $250 being made. If I have to sell this on epay then I make money. The whole object of this exercise is that YOU make money. You know, give a little, get a lot. What I am saying is that I'm not comfortable selling off this stuff piecemeal. It is a hassle for me that I don't need, and you have to pay more per item. The person that buys all of this can then do whatever they want with the pieces, sell 'em, whatever, I don't care. Let's look at this some other ways: Do you know someone who may need geared steam? Do you want a cheap investment to get into geared steam and the 20s/30s era? Best of all, that $250 offer for the SW-1 is more than half the price for the whole lot! Jim :)

This stuff has all been sold. Jim

It took me about 3 weeks to cover all the thread in my spare time. My railroad is all HOn30. When I started it I did not have much space, so narrow gauge seemed to fit the bill. I remember reading articles from Bob Hayden and Dave Frary about using n scale chassis and building new superstructures and that really intrigued me. All my rolling stock is scratch built using Microscale trucksd&couplers. Using styrene and stripwood. So I really don't have a lot of money invested. I recently purchased a n scale NW-2 diesel and converted to a way off scale Climax for my logging line. Its my first DCC loco. will never go back to straight DC. Will post some photos later. Bill:o

Many of you know that mountain climbing was an important part of my life. If I can, I like to have a photo of climbers on the layouts. I was lucky today in that two railroad workers to a break and decided to climb the pinnacle. Climbing in the 1930s was just gaining popularity here in the US. It was popular in Europe for over a century before here. Don't look down! Jim:)

Thanks Bill, I keep trying. Not sure why everyone doesn't take more photos of their work. I'm not sure, as I really only build to take photos, but it seems to me if someone takes a photo then they may have a better appreciation of their own work. Just thinking here. If flaws are found they can be repaired thus leading to a display of better work in the next photo. Oh well. Jim :)

Looks great Jim, as always! I am going to have to start getting some "people" for my layout I suppose, add some life to it.

Tony, People indeed. I think they are a really necessary part of layouts and modules. Seldom in real life will you find an empty street. Maybe Green Bay during a home NFL game, but that's about it.

On another note. It looks like all my HO stuff has been spoken for. Jim :)

I agree with you. I found some flaws in my track work that needs to be redone. Thank goodness I discovered it before I started scenery. Still need to post photos. My train room is in my enclosed back porch and its not heated. Been below 30 degrees this past 2 weeks here in Oklahoma City. Might be a week or so before I can get any work done there. Still have to build a turntable. I can do that inside. Bill
