Hi, I have a Bachmann N scale F7-A diesel locomotive that won't run. When you put it on the track it has power & it tries to run but doesn't. Any suggestions as to how to correct this? Thanks!
Sounds like something could be binding and preventing the motor from running. Take the shell off and look for anything that could be preventing free movement of the drive train. It could be a piece of ballast, some hair thats wound up in the gears or elsewhere or maybe a broken gear. You may have to take it apart if you feel comfortable doing so to find the problem.
While you are doing this, you may as well take the time to clean and lubricate everything. Make sure that you use lubricants that are safe for plastics and remember, a little bit goes a long ways! There is lots of info on the web about cleaning and lubricating model trains so if needed you can do some research before tackling this project. Good luck, Bob.
To remove the shell from an N scale locomotive, it's sometimes helpful to use toothpicks inserted carefully on both sides to gently spread the shell open, to allow the chassis to come out. With some of my engines I can use my fingers to spread the sides.
When you have the shell off, hook two wires to your power pack and with the loco on it's back, touch the wires one to each side and watch what happens, lots of times you can see why the thing won't turn. You can check the contacts where the motor picks up power from the wheel sets, if they are not snug, you can gently bend them to fit better. If all else fails, take it to a hobby shop, most have someone who is knowledgeble who can repair it.
Keep in mind that Bachmann has a pretty good return policy. Send it to them and they will repair or replace. You just pay shipping.
