Hello,
This might sound silly, but can an Athearn HO 90616 DCC Adapter Board be used to make it easyer to hardwire a RTR dc loco from athearn, by replacing the light board with this and pluging in a 9 pin decoder?
Yes, that will work just fine. You will however, still need to isolate the bottom contact of the motor itself from being grounded out to the chassis.
Mark.
how would i do that?
thanks for reply
The simplest method is to break off the two little tabs on the bottom contact strip on the motor which make contact with the chassis. Solder a wire onto the remaining contact strip which will connect to the open terminal on the side of the circuit board. The clip on the bottom of the circuit board will take care of the top motor connection. Looking at the bottom of the board, it will be easy to see which motor terminal is connected to the motor clip and which terminal your new wire needs to be connected to.
In addition to this jumper, you will need to add another wire from the chassis ground to one of the truck input terminals on the end of the board in addition to a wire from each of the original top truck contact strips.
The key thing to remember is that your two track inputs to the board are completely isolated from the two motor inputs.

Everything Mark said, and put a strip of electrical tape on the frame, under the motor......
Just a little extra insurance against accidental contact with the frame!
