Conrail was formed 39 YEARS AGO on 1 APRIL 1976 where were you? I was still 13 years old, being that my birthday wasn't until Labor Day September ..

I was nearing the end of my Navy enlistment, having abandoned the Hobby [first life] several years earlier.

I was working in Passenger Operations on Penn Central's Northeast Corridor Region, Philly Division. It became Conrail's Northeast Corridor region on April 1. Amtrak did not take over the NEC track and operations until September or October of 1976, so it was all Conrail on day 1. (Damn, I feel old relating this factoid).

I was beginning my time of 6 months temporary duty stationed in Germany, with the US Army. I also missed the biggest 4th of July in our country's history.

I was trying to finish my last class in Nursing School, without going crazy! The class was Psychiatric Nursing. Spent a lot of time in the mental hospital, trying to interview several patients. My main Pt. would talk freely and describe to me several around the world voyages, in great detail, while working as a merchant marine. Trouble was, he never was a MM, and had never been out of the state. Great case of transference. He always wanted attention from anyone, anytime, anywhere.

I was very busy with owning and operating a business manufacturing custom embroidered patches, emblems and high school award letters employing up to seven people during this process. I also retailed jackets, caps and sweaters. Railroads had taken a back seat although they were always around.

I had just turned 18, was studying Civil Engineering while working a temporary summer job for the Montreal Olympics raising the flag of the winning country for the indoors sports such as basketball, handball, volleyball, boxing and wrestling. Also did it for archery and shooting, it was a great summer.

Was never a huge Conrail fan but, it's kinda strange them not being around...

I was 29 years old and in my 9th. year of teaching Vocal and General Music in Waverly, NY. Only connection I had with trains at that time was driving down to Sayre, PA and watching the switching in the yard on Saturdays.... My two son's do remember seeing the American Freedom Train roaring through Waverly on the D&H Tracks on it's way to Binghamton, NY on July 16th., 1976. She was supposed to stop for photographs in Waverly but was running about 2 hours late and was making up time. WOW was she making up time! Came through town and held the whistle open the whole time she was roaring by! What a show!!! The boys were bored stiff until they heard the whistle off in the distance. My oldest bought me a photo of the train on her way through Waverly a few years ago for Christmas. I had thought he would have forgotten all about it.....

I was three and a half years old. Living somewhere between Erie,PA and Waukegan,IL.. Mom was finishing up her contract with GE as a plant nurse and Dad was working at the Com Ed plant in physical maintenance waiting for Mom's contract to expire so we could move to the Chicago area permanently.

I was in college at a school in the deep south where they did not let us listen to the radio or watch TV (we might hear/see a drinking or smoking commercial). So the event was not even noticed.
