Am I the only one....

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Am I the only one who is happy with the bare-bones layout...no scenery, no nothing except a fully functional layout where everything works? Trains run smoothly, DCC system works great, etc. etc., but it's just the benchwork, trackwork, DCC, and not much more.

It's the Philadelphia Reading Layout from the 101 Track Plans. It's quite complicated: 3 reversing loops, tons of switches, a nice big yard area, (my next project) and 4 levels of track in one area. Anyway, I'm enjoying just watching my 2 trains running simultaneously controlled by my wireless handheld controller.

I guess you could say my enjoyment comes from watching the trains run and for me, at least for now, that's enough. Am I the only one here like this?
You're not alone; at least one big time modeler did just what you did. David Barrow when he tore down his Cat Mountain & Santa Fe he just built a Plywood Prairie in modules of his own design with Atlas code 100 rail IIRC. Don't know if he still has that one or not.

I'm with you!

I have just oval tracks laid on plywood covered with heavy brown contractors paper. The trains are the stars of my show and I love it!

We have Woodland styrofoam risers gone wild. The whole layout is 3" risers double tracked code 100 HO on foam track bed. Two to 3 inch wide slots or ditches or canyons between. What a mess, runaway trains on down hills then back up again. This happened fast, quick setting glue and too much fun making hills or mountains. There is no flat spot for a building. The surprise is my small diesel loco tears around the thing fast pulling a dozen cars. This big white thing in the basement...now what?
