I took this shot while doing an inspection in the Winnipeg CPR yard.
Anyone else see the irony of running this particular car over the end? 😝

Nice! I like the Lionel Standard O freight cars. They're a true 1/48-size, as opposed to their smaller Traditional-size or smaller yet O27-size. And with their molded-on details, they're fairly rugged to boot.

Here's one of my favorite Standard O boxcars..............

I like to doctor them up a little bit, too. On this car, I've added stirrups (made from staples) at each end for our 1/48 scale brakemen to stand on.
The top door guides come as black molded plastic, which I've painted to match the box car red color. I also modified the under frame to provide a better looking, lower ride height. A lot of 3-rail O-gauge cars ride a little too high to suit me, so I try and figure out a good way to lower them if at all possible. I also added a scribed wood floor inside, but unfortunately don't have a good picture of that right at the moment. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the 2 different eras of lettering that Lionel chose to put on this car (late steam era to the left of the door, 2nd generation diesel era lettering to the right). At least, I don't recall ever seeing a prototype picture of an actual R.I. box car lettered this way. Actually, I'd love to find a photo of a R.I. box car with these mixed styles. I'd probably sleep better at night! 🤪 Oh well, since these Lionel Standard O cars can be found fairly reasonable on the used market, I'm willing to overlook some minor flaws here and there.
