1/87th Vehicles

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Another thing that is differant here in the states is we live in our trucks for extended time. Some drivers stay on the road for a month or more at a time.
I stay out for 5 to 7 days at a time myself. I jusst couldnt stand living in anything smaller. Besides that this Kenworth is almost too small for me. I used to drive a Freightliner and they are larger inside then these Kenworths are. When I stayed out for a month at a time I even had a small TV in the truck with me.

That's true about the Freightliners. I worked for Freightliner before getting into law enforcement. They have such roomy sleepers!!!

Cab Over Engine

COE sleepers are set sizes. If you had a conventional tractor, and the sleeper was smaller, chances are, they have a larger one too...

O Ok. We are talking in general. The common size sleeper on most trucks today are 70 inch. The Freightliner Condo is a cab and sleeper all in one. I like how freightliner did there cab sleeper condo one could stand on the bunk and still not reach the roof. Had plenty of storage and room to live in.
In the Kenworth I cant stand between the seats and the cab and sleeper are basicly still two pieces all though the opening is much larger then in the past.
As far as looks I like the Freightliner Coronado and the new International Lonestar.

Is that RV Freightliner real or just a computer simulation? It sure looks nice but I can't help but wonder how you meet overal length restrictions if yu're actually hauling freight.

Josh, that second truck would have been a good patrol unit in a few areas of LA I used to work in. :)

I was in 3 WM's today in a town south of me & all of their 1/87th vehicles were marked down. The $1.97's were $1.00 ea. & the 5 packs were $5.00 ea.
I think some of the stores are getting away from 1/87th because they're not selling anymore. I was in a hobby shop today & they had tons of vehicles & they said the same thing, Not Selling any.

I noticed the price change in two different states and numerous stores in the last few weeks Larry (Iowa and Missouri) and actually picked up quite a few new cars. Could be a price drop company wide.

yeah WM scaling down a lot on the toys. they used to carry model supplies but i went looking for some model glue and testors paint. the whole section is gone....like it was never there. I know i saw it about a month ago. they had a few bottles of thinner for .50 left on the clearence aisle. but the paint glue brushes, all gone. the 1/87 vehicles have been a dollar out here for a while now.

Airslide, I was told yesterday at 1 of the WM's that a lot of the stuff we buy in the crafts dept. will be gone by the end of the year. Almost all of the WM's don't carry Fabrics anymore & all the supplies that goes w/them.
They are cutting back anything that doesn't sell everyday. I normally bought all of my Testors at WM for 97 cents a tube. Yesterday I bought 2 tubes at $1.97 ea. at a hobby shop. That hobby shop wasn't carrying any train stuff or plastic planes, ships, cars or motorcycles until WM stopped selling them.
He said those items are selling like hotcakes since most kids have to stay at home during the summer because of the gas prices.
I've had quite a few calls from friends that don't know where to buy plastic glue or model paints for their train hobby. I'm using a lot more super glue now than I use to. I also buy a lot of the WM spray paints in Hardware dept.

Same thing here, all the hobby stuff is gone and the 1/87 scale cars are on sale for a buck. I suspect the end is near for Walmart being a cheap source of vehicles for our layouts. :(

I hope they keep selling the 1/87 cars. I buy some every time I go there.

Stan.

luckily my LHS is rather close, less than 10 miles. but not as close as WM. Hobby lobby and Michaels relatively close too. truth be told, id rather give my LHS the business before hobby lobby and michaels. even though hobby lobby has been running a 30% off sale on all model rr stuff for a while now. as for the cars, mostly all WM has left is early model luxuary cars. I have all the late model non luxuary stuff already. knowing what I know now, i better stock up on acrylics and any other fabric/craft stuff i use for my layout... thanks for the heads up.

i got this 2005 white crown vic at hobby lobby for about 3 bucks.

What years of vans, and what type? Herpa makes a few vans, and Wal*mart used to carry a line of mid-70's vans. Malibu had a few panel vans right now (I think one is a Mercedes, and I know the other is a VW).

Josh, When WM was selling the vans they couldn't sell them at my local WM, so one day about a week after Christmas last year or the year before they sold all of them to me for 2 for a buck. I think I have about 48 of them.
I've been wanting to 2 tone a bunch of them, but don't take the time.
I think I have all of the VW vans in all the colors. I've only found 1 of the yellow Mercedes vans.
Wish they would send the unsold vehicles to other stores, but they won't.

I think that this may well be the end of 1/87 at Walmart

Earlier this month my wife and I went on vacation departing from Oklahoma, into the Texas panhandle, then into New Mexico and Colorado. On our way home we went through Kansas. Before we left the local Walmarts had lowered the entire Malibu line to $1.00. While on the trip, we stopped at a number of Walmarts and found the same thing. I suspect that the prices have been cut nationwide.

Walmart did the same thing about three years ago shortly after they first introduced the line. Many of us felt that this was then end at that point but we were wrong. I suspect that this may be the end this time however. The stock just seems to be sitting even at $1. As we went around the region, I picked up any of the models that would add to my collection.

If Walmart understood who was buying this line they would probably drop it since they seem to be running kicking and screaming from anything hobby / craft related. I suspect that Walmart would sell many more of this type of model if they would get away from the extravagant vehicles and instead carry more down to earth models. I see this as a problem is the Hot Wheels and Matchbox line as well as the Malibu. The Fresh Cherries were a nice attempt but it reached a limited market. Interestingly, the Fresh Cherries and the Reel Wheels lines were still showing at full price.
