Yes, I would like to avoid elevation changes for 2 reasons:
1) My first layout
2) When I had them in an earlier plan they needed to be 3% or 4% grades to get up and over track because of my 'small' space.
In my plan I do have to back up to do most anything on the layout, however I did figure...

Here's what I've tried.
The first picture shows how small the yard has to be to fit on a diagonal, and the second picture shows a try at a curved yard.
-
No matter what I do, I just don't have the room to have a double ended yard like in your drawing...........
I even tried with a curved yard, but still not enough room. The only way to do it would be to go with a point to point design.
-
Otis - Thanks for taking the time to do that.
As I said in my previous post, I may be cutting the yard size down when I actually see it in the table.
As for having to back up when using it, it's something I keep looking at too. The only thing I could come up with was a reverse track...

Try these: (You can send the wife in ;) )

Your layout looks very good, by the way. It's a very similar size and shape as mine!

Yup - I just removed the extra control points and the 'blinking' stopped!
-
Mixy - Happy you found it! Great work!!

Here is what may be my final track plan (at least on paper).
Things may change of course as I put down cork and track on the table. I can see I may lose a yard track if it's too busy looking on the table.

Thank you all for replying - all good stuff.
HardcoreABN: Does your table sag at all where there is no leg in the front middle corner? Mine will not be as wide as yours (only 30"), so I'm curious.
After seeing your pictures I'm leaning toward L-girder without the top joists. The plywood will...

After searching here and all over the 'net all day all I've done is confuse myself... Most web sites have incomplete photos of what is under the layout and I'm hindered with a visual type brain. If I can see it, I can most likely build it, otherwise I'm totally lost.
I'm ready to start my...

Happy to help - let me know if you need anything else from me.

I started using SCARM one version back from this new release only a few weeks ago.
And yes, it did this on the earlier version as well.
File sent..........

Here you are Mixy........
Here's what I did - I loaded Scarm, then my plan, then clicked on the 3D button and saved snapshot1.bmp.
Then I closed the 3D view, clicked the 3D button again and saved snapshot2.bmp.
Then I used Windows Paint to crop each snapshot and convert them to png format to...

Mixy, Here's an update to my post earlier with that screen shot. You might like to know I have an Nvidia 460 graphics card in my computer and the 3D renders very quickly for me.
The only thing I notice once in a while is that some elements do not render on the first try, but they always do on...
-
I just tested it and the 3D snapshot feature worked perfectly for me! (See the attached thumbnail of my trackplan. I had to crop it and convert it to a png file so I could post it here, otherwise I made no changes.)
Also - I will very much like and use the copy and paste function between two...

Call off the Cavalry! I got it working!!
I found the solution here - God only knows why this page didn't appear for me before: http://jmri.sourceforge.net/help/en/manual/3-0_DecoderPro/Main_VSD.shtml

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.......
Here's a video of someone who has it working on their N scale layout: http://youtu.be/04RHOqRbt_E

I've been playing around with JMRI all morning. I really like the look and idea of the free iPhone wireless throttle. I even linked it to JMRI running on my PC.
I don't have a layout yet, but I'm planning one. JMRI imported my plan from XTrkCAD and supposedly I can run trains on my computer...

I'm using Scarm, and found it easy to learn. There's a link to my track plan thread in my signature. All of the pictures of the plan, including the 3D ones, are screenshots of Scarm.
I also just installed XTrakCAD and reproduced my plan in it so that I could 'run some trains' on my plan...

I hope so. My priority for now is the main and yard. I know I don't have a basement size layout here, but I'd like to do some switching/train building when I'm far enough along to connect power.
I'll look for spots for each industry next after I'm done with the plan (likely soon). I know...
