ok guys this has been a great thread but I have issues dealing with my elderly mom and will have to bow out from this for the time being. Its been alot of interesting exchanges, THANKS! Should be back soon once she is home from hospital and settled. Dont be surprised then if I am not responding...

Dude I have a mother in the hospital now for 2 weeks and I'm tired, Then I see a nonsense post from you that was way out of bounds from 1) what I was saying and 2) what the entire thread was about.
Got thaT? ROLLEYES..................
ENJOY LIFE OK? No one is angry over this, its just a...

Thats not what I'm saying. The post I was referring to and we've been batting this around for awhile is that suddenly with the market basically cornered by a very few manufacturers that THEIR quality is down and BELOW WHAT THOSE LINES WERE as far as expectations.
Originally the Proto stuff...

The scale issue is this: SINCE HO IS BY FAR THE MOST POPULAR all stocks of products from the former well loved and now defunct brands: Rivarossi/ConCor/IHC, LifeLike Proto, & ATHEARN original: and all the newer replacement stuff is below expectations on all levels.......
BUT ON THE OTHER...

The bodies are as clean as anything Ive seen but I dont like the highly visible drive gears thru the truck frames. I would think they could have blackened them. Other wise, yeah they look great.

Life Like was having legal problems over its product lines having so many defects. THe drive mechanism thing almost killed them. So Walthers made a deal with the bankruptcy court to buy out all the proto lines and leave the original LIFELIKE brand and product lines in place.
This is why you...

Most guys are putting the athearn drives into their proto stock and seeing improvements. Its just das for those prices that any such modifications would be needed.

I know model railroading was never exactly a poor mans (or kids) thing to really partake in, in any major way. I also see how myself and the rest of us have made up for those lost years and made this into a mans fantasy hobby instead of a kids one.
That is all GOOD AND BAD. I mean some of...

I have no argument over the Genesis line, but Athearn got into our hearts with their highly affordable and detail-able stock that was mechanically dependable. I mean even until just a couple years ago, a basic PA, F unit, or GEEP was still only around $40 -50 bucks compared to KATOs price tag of...

Yes to all that as far as rumors, however, IHC group formerly AHM; is looking to regroup in the model railroad products market and its all been tied up in the legal fine print that has kept them from completing the Athearn purchase. They also were looking at purchasing rights to the Rivarossi...

I will pull those out tonight and make sure thats the ones you describe. If I remember it sounds right. The color is fine due to SAL kitbashing all sorts of E units in the 50s-60s. Will get back to you tomorrow evening. THANKS.

THANK YOU for this thread. When lifelike first introduced the proto lines I was hesitant due to no other maker using that design style or body tooling. I also had examined at some shows the inside setup and that was not easily worked with either as far as redesign or kit bashing.
Even so, I...

HOW ABOUT THIS: had 2 proto 2000 E6s (A&B) given to me in Seaboard Air Line White/red and I love the oddball and over looked RRs so I thought this was a great thing.
HOWEVER, the side frames on 1 truck each unit was shot or missing. I took the side frames off the other unit and created one...

I was planning on shopping the train shows and seeing what I could find. There is always a guy or 2 with a great box of crap that to some people is actually a box of salvation via parts. In the long run I am hoping Horizon gets a handle on this. I would think that among hobby clubs and mid range...

I ran across this post and didnt see how old it was until I started responding. I would shop ebay for a DAMAGED BODY unit of the same maker that is powered. You should get a good deal on that, then change bodies. Thats the shortest + easiest way I would think as well as economical. ALSO look for...
