Weathering Rolling Stock, a Continous thread

Good afternoon.

Time to show the errors of my ways. Gone only 12 days and I forget how to do things.

1. clean car yep check
2. Fade the car with tamiya, yep check
3. let car dry…maybe I rushed this
4. apply Vallejo chocolate black 60-40 mix water to paint…NOT 40 water to 60 paint
5. spray x-21 base coat, ok that worked
6. inspect after drying
7. never apply tamiya Arcylic over Vallejo because the alcohol does work well with Vallejo

Fixable but it shouldn’t have happened.

I will spray one car with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol to strip the car and start over. I think I have enough 99% but it didn’t help I left the cap loose on the bottle.

Back later with some successes

This one is for me. Going to apply decal graffiti and tags on one side. A couple custom drawn tags and a graffiti piece by me.

this one is for a client. The fade and the roof and sides are approved.

Graffiti on one side will be custom hand painted by me. Minus the fade but this is the actual car. The photo is credited on the edge. I might do this after a beer or 3 and I am a light weight when it comes to booze even beer. Terry thinks I’m nuts but I gotta do this. Many of my modern era clients want custom graffiti. I can do it

Finally! These went out the door. Light to medium weathered.

The client wanted no tags and no graffiti. Said make it look like it’s been on the tracks 3 years, but vary each one.

The publicity shot that I will keep
Like those refers, I may well ask for a few similar cars, but definately few months down the line, my wallets still in recovery 😂

On the bench

Except for the black messed up tank cars these are not duplicate pictures. They maybe the same car reporting marks and numbers but they are different cars.

You know me well enough, any time you are ready. I understand the recovering wallet. Good thing the boss was a good guy even though the pump I’m sure was worth 3 or 4 weathered pieces!

No problem weathering them. It’s finding the cars now.

The Walthers Mainline series 25,000 gallon tank cars got hot all of a sudden. I stopped looking Sunday night but those cars with shipping are $40 each now. I just got 6 ScaleTrain Rivet Counter white 31,000 gallon tank cars with shipping at $48+ each. Fantastic details with suggested retail at $49.99 plus $6 shipping it‘s getting crazy. So a decent deal at 8 dollars off. I purchased the 6 because being only a $8 difference from the Walthers cars is a decent though expensive overall value.

James (Alcomotive) will love this! Atlas Centerbeam cars are on sale at Lombardhobby.com. for $36 and I spent too much to get free shipping. I have been waiting for Rapido Centerbeams and have a mixed pack of 6 coming In the 4th quarter of 2023, hopefully. Every now and then James sends me info on Centerbeam sales for Walthers. I think the Atlas Center partition cars are superb, I had and weathered lots of the Walthers . So between 6 Centerbeams, 6 acid tank cars and 6 slurry cars, I got free shipping! I love free shipping…

What color was used for the splatter on the reefers? Did you use the brush flick method?

hopefully that's the right term for it.
I used a stiff brush on thinned dirt from Vallejo. I am not home or would show the number. I flicked using a stir stick against the brush. I didn’t (still don’t) like the larger splotches on the reefer ends. He did and said leave them, so I did.
