A lot of people don't want the hassle of cutting a 2X4 sheet of Masonite into the small pieces needed for the pad and then cut the beveled angles on each end. I for one, vote for the kit to keep things simple.

You're correct about buying a larger sheet and cutting to size, even if you discard the unused pieces.

In any case the end result is a great track cleaner that can be used alone or in a train like John Allen used his track cleaners.
