Proto 2000 Squeak

I bought a proto 2000 SD9. Has a slight derailment while I was out of the room which held the loco in place, but still running. Since it has developed an annoying squeak while running. I've tracked the sound down to the rear truck or driveshaft. Removing the rear drive shaft and running the loco with only the front truck powered makes the sound go away. Can a driveshaft be damaged? It looks idential to the front driveshaft, I can see no damage. I'm confused. Suggestions?

I seem to have the problem solved. It was the worm gear on the rear driveshaft had run or worn through all its grease by running in place. A little new grease and seems to be running stong again.

That's good to know. I have an Erie Built P1K that has a bit of a squeak in reverse. Was your squeak in both directions?
