Portable Workstation (kinda)

I've been doing some designing on a "portable" "workstation", something that can be taken off the wall (using french cleats to fasten to wall), and be either stored in a closet or taken to my woodshop where my hobby room is. Some place to build a model but still be in the house at night (more or less with family). But have all or most of my tools, paints, brushes, knives, etc. and still be able to close it up (with model inside) and place some where out of the way if need.

I'll probably build it out of 1/2" cabinet grade plywood or maybe 3/4" with an oak veneer. Stain and finish so it will look like a wall cabinet but like I said before with a french cleat, you can take it down really easy if needed.

Here are some drawings.

Handy, what dimensions are you thinking of ?

Thought about just buying a couple of these but with the cost and the type of storage I want (store uncompleted model) just didn't see a way to do with this type of set up and have everything in one place. My idea is partly from this storage system and a Gerstner tool chest (which I would really like to have for other reasons). So, I decided to design my own and see if my ideas really will work in the "real world".

I think this method would work better for you, less bulky to carry around I think.

Smudge617,

The box I’m going to build or the gerstner box or hobby zone box ??

The problem I have with the gerstner box is great for storing tools not so much to store a model in progress.

Same for hobby zone, great to store supplies but have the same problem with storing a model in progress.

The bottom portion of my design you can put all tools away and put your model in progress on the very bottom. Granted not a tall model but a portion or subassembly will fit in that space. Then close the “table” up and all is clean in a safe place.

I wouldn’t be moving this everyday but if needed I could take it off the wall and take to the shop, take to the spare room, or even take it on vacation and set up on a table and do some modeling.

That’s what my thinking behind this “work station cabinet”.

You spent some time thinking of what would work for your needs, including use cases. Good job!
lol yeah been thinking, designing, tinkering, but haven’t cut anything yet it put something together to see if any ideas work. That’ll be the next step if I would quit redrawing ideas and just try something. Hate to waste material on “wonder if this will work “. For now still in the design stage, course my dad used to say “fire the engineer and just build it”. lol my dad was a structural engineer, so it was always funny coming from him but sometimes it’s true!!

This is the latest creation I been thinking of doing. Vertical almost the size of a briefcase but vertical to hold tools and also a model on the bottom.

Good idea I was thinking the same just haven’t designed a version like that yet to see if it would work better.

Most of the time it would be in an L shape in the corner but yeah would help stability for sure and maybe even more room to store a model in progress.

Thanks for the suggestion
