One of the keynotes of the 1870's was link and pin couplers. I have a web article detailing my attempt to make an operating link and pin coupler system for my OO scale 1870's layout at:

Interesting article. It is functional, but to me looks a little out of place. Did you consider painting them so they don't stand out so much?

That is just the experimental mockup. A better looking drawbar(the part on the car) will be developed.
