Newer Cars, Trucks and Buses

Hi guys,

I'm wondering does anyone know where I can get Greyhound Buses HO scale that are not 1950's Era?

My railroad is late 1980s- late 1990s right before NS Conrail Merger. I have a couple Conrail Locomotives, 1 Cheesie Locomotive a Burlington Northern Locomotive a CSX SD40-2 and an L&N Family Lines SD40-2.

I want to get some more Conrail, maybe a Southern just because and a couple NS locomotives, but mostly Conrail. Anyhow I've looked on Amazon and Ebay and I'm just wondering if you guys know of anything, because I got nothing ha-ha!

Walthers has a really good selection, but it's all 1950s stuff and that's not what I am modeling. Also Taxi Cabs? Walthers has a pretty good 1997 Ford Crown Victoria Cab so that's good there, but I'm also looking to see if there is anything else like the Cheecker Cabs that were popular for a long time. Which would technically would fit the last Cheecker Cab was retired in New York City in 1999.

Anyhow looking for Greyhound Buses 1970s-2000 and even city buses same era I have a Bus Station on my layout and I also have a City Bus Garage and School Bus Garage.

Athearn's Checker cab is a 1958 model. Only appearance difference is the newer ones had thick heavy bumpers and dual headlights. You could easily replace the bumpers with strips of styrene. Additional headlights might be slightly more difficult. The Checker's sheetmetal remained unchanged from 1958 through to the end of production.

As you search for 1/87 scale vehicles, check Truckstop Models. They have always had a wide selection of vehicles from many manufacturers, and they only do 1/87 scale. They are currently having a "going out of business " sale. They are a great source for 1/87 sale vehicles and will be missed.

Thank you both for the replies. Yes it sure seems that as far as buses go us later date model railroaders are poorly served, that is for sure. They have later date everything else, but not a bus go figure.

Thanks for the heads up on truck stop models, I'll be checking them and scoping out more of what they have.

Maybe Shapeways has some patterns on file for 3-d printing these newer bus models in 1:87? If they don't have any now, maybe they could get them in the future...

Certainly seems the only ones doing them are the Europeans, guess it reflects the dominance of airlines in the US domestic passenger market, even the venerable US standard school bus seems to be forgotten.

I found this website a friend of mine gave it to me, http://www.fjbuses.com/1_87_scale1.htm

I placed an order for a couple Northern Hasserot Brandt trucks so I'll get some pictures up of those, Northern Hasserot Brandt is a regional food service supply company based out of Cleveland, Ohio. They service the entire state of Ohio and Detroit, Michigan, they are owned by the Erie, PA based company C.A. Curtze. Obviously a couple rare NHB trucks would be pretty cool ones a tractor trailer and then other is a straight truck.

I also placed an order with truck stop models, I bought 4 of the Ford ABC Ale beverage semi trucks and 1 Schlitz 1941 box truck those will be parked at Central Beverage Distributors.

That bus site is going "Straight to the pool room" (favourites) and they even showed a modern school bus.

Do you have a site to go to by any chance? Might be interested in a coach, 1/87th scale, if you have any from the mid 90's to early 2000 era. Mostly thinking about a Scania or Volvo but make isn't that important. Would be interested in knowing what you had n general though, trucks as well.

My email is wombat457@wildblue.net

Might as well ask since I couldn't find any

I'm looking for cars in late 50's to late 60's
My layout is mid 60's

Thanks

The subject seems to come up every now and then, so I copied the following from another thread to paste it here. Sadly, Truckstop Models has closed down since my original post, but the rest of the info is still the same.

The problem with any era, for American passenger cars, is that most manufacturers make a model for a limited time, and then the model is discontinued. Your best bet for the most variety is to do your shopping for 1/87 scale vehicles on E-bay. You may also find some at Truckstopmodels.com and in the Walthers catalog. Great list Jim, one which amplifies one thing ... although I didn't each and every vehicle you listed, I don't think I saw anything newer than the 70's, in the main, with the majority being in the 50's and 60's.

When I was looking for the truck I wanted, it seemed as though there was a huge jump in 1/87th scale choices, going from the 50's era to the late 2000's, but not too much in between. wonder if that is an indication that people are loosing interest in having vehicles on their layouts or, due to economic retardation, choosing to put their money on more relevant things for their layouts. Sort of economically prioritizing what they buy and the HO Scale vehicle side of things, or lack of it, reflects that ?

It sure seems to be a problem with newer vehicles. I am modeling the transition era and have been collecting vehicles for about 25 years. I try to get the best looking to scale vehicles I can. I started off with Alloy Forms vehicles years ago and in recent years many more vehicles for this era have come about, with Classic Metal Works leading the way. What I like about them is that they have vehicles that are what I would call more common place, 4 door sedans, station wagons and cars that the common person would but. I do see some more modern vehicles, but from what I see, many are pick up and miscle cars, or European cars. Nothing that is common on the streets of America.

I am happy with what I have, but I can see the frustration of people modeling more modern eras.

Tony, the list isn't complete and was originally from a thread inquiring about 60's and 70's vehicles for a 70's layout. Since my own layout and my own interest in cars is more centered around that time period as well, I am less familiar with the availability of newer vehicles in 1/87 scale. But I do know of a few. Ricko makes (or made) several vehicles from the late 90's to early 2000's, including the 05-09 Mustang, Chrysler 300's and Dodge Chargers, PT Cruisers and Chrysler Crossfires and a Cadillac SUV. Busch made the mid-90's Caprice and Ford Crown Vic, Ford Probe, and Chrysler minivans, as well as Chevy S-10 Blazers. Atlas made late 90's Ford Taurus sedans and pickup trucks, and I believe Ford Explorers from that era. Herpa made a 90's Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ertl made late 90's Dodge pickups (regular and dually), River Point Station has made a large variety of newer Ford trucks and SUVs. Walthers also made a Ford Crown Vic a few years back that was I believe the last incarnation of Ford's big rear wheel drive car. Trident makes Ford and Chevy trucks from the 80's or possibly early 90's.

Jim,

Yep, they are around, just not as prominent as the era you model or the 50' 60' era. Maybe it is because most of the cars today have no character and made of plastic and recycled coke cans who knows :)
