MOW and other Vehicle Weathering

Back at the old bench in a new location. I tried to move things around the bench and thought I did a good job until my wife said, “I thought you were going to move things around.” Seems most everything was put in similar places on the bench. But, I know what changed…

First up is a RiverrPoint Station (now Atlas owned) Ford F450xlt pickup with cherry picker. Still in stock. This unit was purchased via Pacific Western Rail Systems in Canada as part of a special supposedly one time run.

Ignore the Santa Claus coaster! Wood chip fell out and it is glued back and drying

I brushed on VMS clear Mat varnish and it is drying. This will be become dirty but some rust in spots.

I will be dropping in showing this. Not much weathering to do. Some fading, some dirt and specks of rust around the wheelwells and doors.

On the PWRS website they do show the following 2 pickups available and a CP truck.

As always, I welcome constructive criticism. I also welcome your MOW and other vehicles

I would have put everything back in the same place myself. That is how I find stuff. Going back to my first farm, 40 years, I always put things in the familiar place.

Alternatively, I will put it the first place I looked when I couldn't find it, (after it is located of course). Knowing that is where I will be looking for it next time as well

Here is my MOW truck, still haven't gotten around to weathering

Very cool Dave. Plus that is a great looking scene.

I used Tamiya Black Panel liner what the Section Section Podcast crew calls “taco sauce” on the truck. While you should be a bit neater then what I show as the idea is to touch and flow. My shakes were going pretty good at the time I did this. It will dry over night though not necessary and I will clean up the excess using mineral spirits and a few cotton swabs.

ABOVE Sloppily applied panel liner

Based on past usage of Panel Liner my gloss finish may not have had enough “gloss” applied. I can’t remember being this sloppy before. BUT, all is not lost! Mineral spirits and cotton swabs swiped across the lines will remove all the black outside the panel line.

You’ll see tomorrow!

I like using a pencil eraser to touch up panel line accent. It leaves the stuff behind in the recesses but gets it off the surface without damaging the finish of the paint. Looks like you were quick enough with the mineral spirits that wasn't an issue. Pencil erasers are good when working with powders, too.

Thank you. I actually let the panel liner dry over night as the mineral spirits has always worked for me. I knew and have used soft pencil erasers for removing Pan Pastels. Never even thought about it on the panel liner. I have a few tractor trailers to do and I will experiment with the eraser this month.

Thanks for the tip

This minor project turned into something a bit more. I posted on one of the weathering page groups I belong to and a couple guys offered a crazy amount for the truck. So I sold it. Before shipping this morning I took a couple pictures of the next one I weathered.

Sold another I had after confirming the CN trucks were still available at PWRS

I left this windshield dirty as the client said most of the time his hi-railer has a dirty windshield as the wipers may work but there’s seldom any cleaning fluid.

Nice work guys!
I have a few in need of a little grime, I’m going to try masking the windshield where the wipers would clear and shoot the remainder with some “1/87 bugs”.

Thanks for the comment Rico. I just wanted to dull down the new look finish to the vehicle. I loved the examples and the helpful information that I used and will use on the next set. Bugs!!! That will be interesting to see.

Wow, those are REALLY Detailed. I have seen more CN hi-rail vehicles than I can count and can personally say those are spot on!
Do they ever let the CN stuff get really dirty? My imagination isn’t that great for weathering projects so I use prototype pictures. I‘d like to dirty one up but the one I did last night I do not like it. I will be stripping it off tonight

Decision made. I will carefully strip off the door panels. While I dont 100% like this picture, it is real and looks ok. The dirt moves upward and when doing a model, that seems strange to me

The dirt is moving downward. The truck was dusty and as the water/overspray got on it as it went down the road the air is pulling it down and to the back.
I think your truck is a little too much on the cab area. The tool box is good.
