How do you manage such detail on your diorama's, do you use reference photo's ?

I am always hunting for diorama items on eBay. Before I would make a model and glue all the interior/exterior items down (for example people, furniture, tools, cars etc). That gets expensive and some of those items get harder to find. Now I am reusing them.
As for the details, sometimes I will refer to old vacation photos but for the most part I just use my imagination and think what it must have looked like back then.
