Afternoon everyone, I'm about to get one of the Athearn Genesis UP 3985 Challengers when they come out soon. The tender included is the oil converted tender from around 1990. I want to backdate the Loco to have the coal tender as she was restored in 82. Is there an easy way to do this? Could I just buy say a Rivarossi tender and hook it up. For clarity I will be getting the analog version not DCC.
I’m not a steam guy but I’d imagine you can add any tender you like if the pickup wire/plug matches?
Someone will come along with the correct info I’m sure.
Why did the locomotive need to sit on a pillow?
Because it had a tender behind!

Many of them, especially the older ones, had both coal and oil bunkers for the tender in the box. You may luck out, and find it's still this way. Alternately, you can check the auction place for a coal bunker.

Folks he will be here all week!
Update: I found a dealer in Switzerland who had some of the Athearn centipede tenders for sale. Thanks everyone for your help.
Um, yeah… we’re going to need pictures when you’re done please!
