ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I sent them my photocopies and old images of the original, and they did the rest, pretty much what you showed in your post. They took all the work out.

If you are not happy with your results...

Hi Dave.

The problem with just sending old images and such is that it becomes time-consuming to the company that's doing the work to convert it to something they can use to print with, so most of the cost is just labour.

Once I've got an actual model in my hands I can size the images to fit (now my sister has helped me out with the whole background problem), and there's a member on a UK forum who has offered to print them for me.

I can print them on my inkjet printer the problem is I have to seal them with dull coat, which causes the whole decal to go fuzzy, I'd rather try with a laser jet first if that doesn't work I can make an appointment with Fox Transfers who are about an hour away and give all I have to them, As I've done all the artwork, sizing etc. they would (hopefully) just need to convert it to whatever program they use to print with.

Well getting away from the coaches for a while, the loco to pull them arrived this morning, it was going cheap as it has a couple of issues, one Buffer is missing and the lights only work in one direction, also it's not DCC or DCC ready.

I was surprised at it weight for its size, and no traction tyres.

This might be why, it's a big got a big A£$$%d motor in it.

I've never converted one of these motors before, it has parts I've never seen, I'm assuming the two diode looking things on the left are some type of resister, the square capacitor on the right I know, but the spring looking thing, clueless ?

Ah well first things first, find some LEDs or probably SMDs the right size, I think I'll need to order those to replace the bulbs, while I wait, I'll crack on with the motor.

You can see on this photo from the scratch marks that someone has had a go at this before, but I can't work out what the tabs top and bottom are for, they don't seem to have any power and they don't go to ground either.

The diodes are probably are used to select lighting depending on direction of movement.
If this is the case, one of the diodes is bad or you have a defective bulb (or both), resulting
in lights working in one direction only.

I believe the spring looking thing (inductor) and square capacitor comprise a noise filter required on European
locos. I had to eliminate the inductor by soldering a wire across it and remove the capacitor by cutting it out
prior to installing dcc decoders on a couple of Bachmann locos.

The tabs are probably just insulated places to make soldered connections.

I believe this information is valid and if is not, someone please chime in and clarify.

All makes sense, although I've never had a loco with a inductor before, as I'm replacing the bulbs with LED/SMDs and adding a decoder most of the electrics will be removed anyway but it's always good to learn about stuff you've never seen before. Thanks.

Decoder fitted, I'm just painting the back of the light bars as there is a significant light bleed, tomorrow I need to connect the LEDs and tidy the wiring up and it should be up and running.

And I'm still waiting on the DB coaches I bought to arrive. :(

Nice, and only £200, (minus the locos of course).

They look great!

I'm curious, what is the American Orient Express?
